What is a Circuit Breaker? How to Check and Reset a Circuit Breaker Box in Your Dallas Home
12/13/2019 (Permalink)
Check and reset the circuit breakers in your Dallas home to prevent electrical fires.
Before the invention of electricity, people had to make do with living in a world that was often dark, dreary, and cold. Fortunately, we don’t have to deal with that anymore. With the flick of a switch, our homes are bathed in light. We have the luxury of modern appliances, and our homes are a place of comfort and coziness. But do you know what keeps your electricity working tirelessly and safely in the background? The circuit breaker is one of the essential devices in the modern age. And it’s the home base of electrical activity in your house. Here’s what you need to know about checking and resetting a circuit breaker box.
What is a Circuit Breaker?
A circuit breaker is a switch that automatically stops the flow of electricity when there is an overload or short in the electrical system. The circuit breaker box is where the different switches are housed. However, the circuit breaker box isn’t the source of electricity in your home. That distinction belongs to the local power plant. So how does electricity get from the power plant to your house?
How a Circuit Breaker Works
The power distribution grid carries the power from the plant to individual homes. Inside the home, electric charges move in a large circuit, which houses many smaller circuits inside it. At one end of the large circuit, a hot wire goes straight to the power plant. The opposite end, called a neutral wire, goes into the ground.
So, the hot wire is connected to a source of high energy, while the neutral wire is in the ground where there isn’t an energy source. As a result, the voltage can travel in rapid, alternating currents across the circuit, powering your home.
Circuit Breakers: Fire Prevention in Your Dallas Residence
A consistent voltage between 120 to 240 volts is delivered from the power distribution grid to the house. But the current and the resistance of the voltage will change and vary throughout the home and its electrical devices. For example, light bulbs and appliances offer a particular amount of resistance. This resistance is called a “load.” The load is what powers the appliance or light bulb.
When a home is wired with electricity, hot wires and neutral wires do not touch. The charge that’s flowing through the circuit goes through the appliance or light bulb. The electrical resistance in an appliance, for example, will limit how much charge goes through the circuit. For the most part, the system runs smoothly. But sometimes, a hot wire may contact with a neutral wire or something else that is grounded.
For example, the motor in a ceiling fan could overheat and melt the hot and neutral wires together. Home remodeling can also lead to punctures in the power lines throughout the walls of the house. Hot wires that are connected to the ground lead to less resistance in the circuit. The voltage will create a considerable amount of electrical charge through the hot wire. This overheating will cause a fire. Your circuit breaker’s job is to prevent this from happening. Whenever the current is detected at a high, unsafe level, the circuit is cut off.

Checking and Resetting a Circuit Breaker in Your Dallas Home
Circuit breakers are housed within a grey metal main service box that is attached to a wall. In most homes, the main service box is located in the basement, garage, or utility closet. A circuit breaker will only switch off power to the room in the house where a short or overload has happened. But it’s still annoying when you kitchen loses power while you’re trying to make a piece of toast before dashing out the door for work. Fortunately, it’s easy to check and reset the circuit breaker. But first, a few safety tips:
- Wear safety goggles
- Ensure that your hands are dry
- Stand on a dry surface when checking the breaker
- Do not stand directly in front of the service box when resetting the breaker
First, turn off all the lights and unplug the appliances in the room that’s been affected. You’ll want to use a flashlight to open up the main service box and ensure that you can adequately see which circuit breaker has been changed. Every breaker within the service box will have three positions that you can switch it to - on, off, and center position. The circuit breaker that’s been flipped to the center position is the culprit and the one that needs resetting.
Flip the offending breaker to the “off” position, and then flip it to the “on” position. Wait a minute. If the switch stays put, then you’ve successfully reset the breaker, and the power is back on in the affected room. But what’s causing the issue in the first place? In most cases, the switch gets flipped to the center position when an electric device has shorted. Or there are too many appliances running at once that are overloading the system.
How to Find a Shorted Device
Switch each light in the affected room on and off. If the breaker stays put, then unplug and plug in each device that’s in the affected room. Whatever trips the circuit breaker to the center position when you plug it in is the culprit. When you look at the device’s power cord, you’ll see charring or a melted power cord.
For overloads to the system, unplug and then plug in all the devices and switch everything on, including the lights. If the breaker trips when you do this, then the room is overloaded. Turn off the major power users, like AC units or space heaters. Plug them into a different room to prevent the breaker from tripping.
But what if when you initially check the circuit breaker, the switch won’t stay in the “on” position? A circuit breaker that keeps going back to the center position after you move it indicates a severe wiring problem in the home. You must contact an experienced electrician asap to prevent a house fire from an electrical wiring issue.

Our Top 5 Holiday Dallas Home Safety Tips
12/13/2019 (Permalink)
While you and your loved ones are ready to relax and take a break for the holidays, home safety should never fall to the wayside, despite the festivities. Did you know that the holiday season is when most house fires occur? Slips and falls from snow and ice are also common. And are you hanging up Christmas lights? Prepare to take a trip to the ER if you aren’t careful. Below are our top five holiday home safety tips. Follow the steps below to ensure that you and your family stay safe while you enjoy the winter wonderland.
1. Lit Candles Holiday Safety Tips
Candles may light up your Dallas home with beautiful holiday ambiance. Fragrant candles can also make the rooms smell like Christmas. But they are dangerous, especially when left unattended or without adequate clearance. Candle fires are four times more likely to occur in December than at any other time of year. One easy way to reduce the risk of fires from candle flames is to give the candle at least three feet of clearance from anything that could be flammable.
Always place the candle on a sturdy surface. Consider covering them with a hurricane globe for increased safety. Whatever you do, do not leave the candle unattended. Children and pets can easily knock a lit candle over and start a house fire.
Now that you know the statistics and risks regarding candle fires, it might seem like using traditional candles to make your home a cozy winter retreat isn’t worth it. Fear not, there are ways to get that beautiful glow without risking a fire. Consider using safe LED candles instead. You can find a variety of different sizes, colors, and styles. If you miss the scent of a lit candle during the holidays, you can purchase fragrant and safe wall plugins to use instead.
2. Cooking and Kitchen Holiday Safety Tips
What would the holidays be without delicious, home-cooked food that you usually don’t get to enjoy the rest of the year? Unfortunately, house fires during the holidays often occur in the kitchen, for many reasons. On top of that, kitchen holiday safety issues can lead to burns and hot grease spills that can send someone to the ER. People get distracted and can leave the burners on, or forget a boiling pot on the stove. Incorrect use of a deep fryer is another holiday safety hazard.
So what can you do to keep everyone safe from fires, spills, and burns?
- Do not place anything flammable near the stove, like mittens and wooden spoons
- Be sure to turn pot and panhandles away from the edge of the oven so no one can knock them over
- Use a timer or alarm, so you don’t forget that something is cooking while you socialize
For added safety and security, make sure you have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen. Check and make sure your smoke detectors are all working, too.
3. Christmas Tree Holiday Safety Tips
Christmas trees are pine trees, and pine is used to make turpentine, an extremely flammable substance. If a Christmas tree catches fire, it is practically explosive. If you are going to purchase a live tree, you’ll want to make sure the plant is as fresh and moist as possible. Also, make sure the needles are intact. A freshly cut trunk will also keep the tree hydrated so it won’t be such a tinderbox. And never place the tree near a fireplace, candles, or radiators.
Learn more about fireplace safety before the holidays!
The air inside the home will mostly turn dry and full of static during the holiday season. This is a recipe for a dry tree that can easily catch fire from the tiniest spark. Be sure to refill the tree’s water supply often, and keep it well-watered during the holidays. But even a fresh and hydrated tree will dry out significantly within a month of being inside a dry, warm house. Discard the tree soon after the holidays to reduce the risk of fire. Are you using an artificial tree? Just make sure the model you choose if fire-resistant. A pre-lit, artificial tree should have a UL rating for safety.
4. Holiday Lights Safety Tips
Are you planning to hang up strings of colored lights for the holidays? Be sure to inspect each light and strand for any damage. Broken sockets on the light strings, or frayed and cracked electrical cords are a fire hazard just waiting for ignition. Never run more than three light strings end-to-end. If you’re using extension cords for the lights, check to see if they are for indoor or outdoor use, and use accordingly. Don’t string together several extension cords. It’s a fire and safety hazard. Hanging lights outside? Use a UL-rated hanger or clip instead of nails or staples.
While the holiday lights may bring a bit of cheer to you during the dreary winter season, try to resist leaving them for months on end. Rodents and pests will chew through the cords, and the elements will damage the lights too. Outdoor lights should be put away within three months.
5. Evacuation Plans
No one wants to think about a fire breaking out in their Dallas home. But to ensure the safety of your family, it’s best to come up with an evacuation plan. Making sure that everyone knows how to exit the house safely and quickly in the event of a house fire will prevent a tragedy from occurring. Develop a strategy for evacuating the home, and practice a few times before the holidays become far too busy.

Preparing Your Dallas Home for Winter: A Checklist
11/15/2019 (Permalink)
Tips from the Experts at SERVPRO to Prepare Your Dallas Home for Winter.
People are right to think they need a home. But the truth of the matter is, homes need people. Without people around to perform regular, routine maintenance houses deteriorate rapidly. Wintertime is especially harsh on your home’s interior, exterior, and critical systems like the HVAC and plumbing. Before we get into the thick of winter, you’ll need to do a few preparations to keep the house in great shape. Our winter home maintenance checklist is a good starting point.
Inspect and Prepare the HVAC System
Number one on our winter home maintenance checklist is the HVAC system. As an essential part of the house, preparing your HVAC system for winter is crucial. On average, a residential HVAC system will last between 12 and 15 years. Some can last over 20 years, while others will die within the first decade after installation. The way an HVAC system is maintained has a lot to do with its lifespan. The more meticulous you are about maintaining your HVAC system, the longer it will last (and vice versa).
Fall and spring are the best times to perform necessary HVAC maintenance. The filters will need to be changed at this time, and it’s a good idea to have an HVAC technician inspect the system. When performing Dallas air duct cleaning, the technician should make sure hot and cold air are running efficiently and going where they’re supposed to go.
Check for Drainage Issues
Water that is given a chance to pool around the foundation wall can cause a range of expensive issues for your home. First off, water left near the foundation walls can lead to bowing and cracking over time. Mold can find its way into the basement, further compromising the structural integrity of the house and increasing the incidence rate of allergies and respiratory infections.
Before winter hits, look around at the soil near the foundation. If the dirt has settled, then these are prime areas for water to pool and cause future repair issues with the property. Don’t panic if you find low spots and depressions in the soil next to the foundation, though. All you have to do is fill them in with dirt.
You’ll also need to find out where the water is coming from in the first place. It’s usually the gutters. If possible, add downspout extenders to your gutters to ensure that water is adequately directed away from the foundation.
Clean the Gutters
Next up on our winter home maintenance checklist are the gutters. The relatively mild seasons of spring and fall are the ideal times to check and clean the gutters. Once winter arrives, it might be too late. The best time to inspect and clean gutters and downspouts are after the trees have lost their leaves. Clogged gutters will cause drainage backups and overflows, leading to water running down the exterior of the house. This can severely damage the home’s siding and other exterior features. Foundations are also compromised when the gutters don’t work correctly.
Seal Exterior Wood
When temperatures are mild during fall, you’ll need to paint, caulk, or otherwise seal any exterior wood. Wood left exposed to the winter elements will become damaged from the freeze, thaw cycle, leading to cracking, splintering, and other structural and cosmetic issues.
Wood for decks is usually pressure-treated or built using rot-resistant wood species. However, trim around doors and windows is generally made out of pine boards that will quickly rot if not cared for adequately. Repairing damaged exterior trim is not easy and the repair will rarely blend in with the rest of the home’s aesthetic. The best cure? Prevention.
Keep the exterior trim painted and caulked - an easy DIY job. Any paint that is chipped, flaking, or cracking will need to be replaced during the fall. Cracked caulk will also need replacing. Simply scrape away the damaged paint or caulk and reapply it fresh.
What about decks? Even though decks are usually made with hardy materials, they still need maintaining before winter weather makes its yearly appearance. Painting, staining, and sealing the deck is a good idea to protect the wood beneath, but you don’t need to do this every year.
Not sure if your deck is due for sealing? Pour some water on it when it is dry outside. If the water beads, you do not need to do anything this year. But if the wood appears to absorb the water, then you need to seal the deck.
Protect and Seal Masonry and other Hard Surfaces
Driveways, sidewalks, and concrete patios will need protecting over the winter season. Apply concrete sealers to all hard surfaces in the fall after you fill in any cracks in the masonry or concrete. Water that gets into masonry cracks will freeze and thaw, leading to larger cracks over time and structural issues. By repairing breaks and sealing the masonry, you’ll ensure that these structures last for many years to come.
Test the Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarms
The majority of house fires occur during the wintertime. People are running their furnaces and using the fireplace to keep the home warm and cozy. Adding to the risk of fires is the fact that the house is sealed up tight to keep the heat in, which makes carbon monoxide poisoning a bigger threat. Before winter starts, inspect all smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to ensure they are working correctly, keeping you and your family safe. If you were diligent in having an HVAC technician inspect the furnace, they should have checked to make sure the furnace and water heater were correctly vented. Ventilation problems are an enormous source of carbon monoxide threats.

7 Most Common HVAC Issues in Dallas & How To Solve Them
9/22/2019 (Permalink)
How often do you think about your HVAC system? If you’re like most people, probably not too often. The home is a place of comfort. It’s where you go to retreat from all the stressors of life.
It’s easy to forget the air in your home is highly regulated by a complex system. But, don’t let the word “complex” fool you. While intricate technology is certainly a part of any cooling and heating unit, it’s not difficult to make sure it’s functioning as best as possible. Once you understand the common HVAC problems and how to deal with them, you can greatly reduce the chance of an expensive and uncomfortable ordeal.
1. Common HVAC Problems in Dallas: Neglecting Regular Maintenance
This is a big one that gets the best of a lot of people. Don’t feel bad if it has happened to you. Again, when you’re in the serenity of your home, it’s easy to forget things go on behind the scenes. Plus, even with regular maintenance, normal wear and tear can cause issues. If you notice any of the following, it may be an indicator that repairs are needed:
- A sudden increase in heating and cooling bills
- Low or no airflow
- Hot and cold spots in one area
- Air conditioner is blowing warm air
- Unusual noises (i.e. whistling or squealing sounds)
- Unpleasant smells
These issues should be checked out as soon as possible since it may mean your HVAC is under too much stress. If it continues in a weaker state, the heart of the system (aka the compressor) could fail. Unfortunately, a dead compressor often results in the need to replace an entire unit. To avoid common HVAC problems, it’s recommended to have your unit inspected by a professional every year.
2. Clogged Filters and Vents
Your HVAC filters have the important job of “grabbing” debris out of the air before it reaches the ducts. When dust and other particles collect in your ductwork, the unit can become clogged. This causes the system to work harder because the airflow is restricted. What’s more, if the filters aren’t properly catching pollutants, you could end up with poor indoor air quality. In addition, if vents are closed or blocked by furniture or other items, airflow can be compromised. The solutions are simple:
- Replace your filters at least every quarter.
- Have your vents and ducts inspected and cleaned every three years.
- Make sure all your vents are open and free of obstructions.
3. Leaks
Another one of the most common HVAC problems is leaking refrigerant and/or water. Refrigerant is a substance in the evaporator system that’s essential in dehumidifying, absorbing heat, and cooling air. When refrigerant levels are low, the air pushed out will be warmer than it should be. If left in this state, the unit will start to work harder than it should. A technician should be able to pinpoint the cause of the low levels.
Also, if you notice water around the evaporator area (located near the blower fan on the inside of the unit), it could be because the drain line is clogged. Cleaning the line yourself is an option; however, it might be a good idea to have a technician take a look to see if there is anything else causing the leak.
4. Dirty Coils
In your unit are two coils — evaporator and condenser. Simply put, the evaporator coil picks up heat from indoor air while the condenser coil transfers the heat to an outside environment. Dust and particles can collect on these coils, causing a decline in the system’s efficiency. In many situations, this is a result of not cleaning the coils at least once a year and/or not changing filters regularly.
If you have an outside AC unit, you might’ve heard you can hose down your coils. The process is a bit more complicated than this. While you can employ DIY cleaning strategies, we must put out the warning that condenser coils have fins that can bend under water pressure. For safe, thorough cleaning, try to find a reputable air duct and HVAC cleaning company.
5. Thermostat Failure
In some cases, common HVAC problems such as uncontrollable temperature fluctuations may come from a malfunctioning thermostat. Luckily, this is often a quick and easy fix. First, check the owner’s manual to see if the thermostat runs on batteries; it may be as straightforward as replacing them. Next, if it’s not a battery issue, reference the manual again to see if there’s an issue with programming (if your thermostat is programmable).
Of course, if the problem consists — you guessed it — it’s probably time to call in a technician to investigate.
6. Blower Fan Issues
HVAC units have fans that blow air through ductwork. As you can probably surmise, when those blower fans stop working, the air stops flowing. This can be caused by the buildup of dirt or a blower motor failure. A trained tech should be able to find the exact cause of the issue.
Another complication is the blowers running constantly. Prior to hiring a technician, check your thermostat; it could be the fan is set to “on”. In this instance, it’s as easy as turning the fan off.
7. Other Common HVAC Problems
Obviously, what we’ve provided today is not an exhaustive list. An HVAC system is an impressive piece of technology with many moving parts. In addition to the complications listed above, there are some other issues that may be culprits:
- The valves that block or regulate airflow in the ducts (dampers) are imbalanced
- The furnace or AC unit has tripped a breaker or blown a fuse
- The furnace has a pilot light that’s out or its ignition device is malfunctioning
- A gas or electrical problem

In Need of Repairs in Dallas? Know When to Use Homeowners Insurance
7/17/2019 (Permalink)
If your Dallas home is in need of repairs, the professionals at SERVPRO can help you navigate your homeowners insurance claim.
For some folks, insurance is a double-edged sword. They know they need insurance in case there’s a disaster, but they certainly don’t want to be faced with a disaster despite the “investment” in insurance. But, the fact of the matter is it’s a necessity and every homeowner should have it. It is a good thing.
Generally speaking, a covered insurance claim is designed to “make you whole”. In other words, it gets your home to the pre-damage condition. In insurance-speak, this is called indemnity. The problem that arises here is claims can result in higher premiums or possible policy cancellations. There are some situations in which an insurance company may question the validity of a claim:
- The costs of repairs or replacement do not exceed the policy deductible.
- The damage and claim fall underneath the exclusions section of the policy.
- The damage and claim could’ve been prevented.
It’s possible the last point gave you pause. Surely, a natural disaster isn’t preventable. However, let’s say a natural disaster causes damage to a roof that’s in obvious disrepair. This may end up a denied claim. For this reason, we’ve decided to share some preventative measures and fixes that are more cost-effective to handle yourself versus using home insurance.
Take Care of Your Roof
Remember when we mentioned the hypothetical roof problem?
If maintained properly, roofs should last about 25 to 30 years. The first inspection should occur 10 years after installation with additional inspections happening every 3 to 5 years.
As far as what you can do on your end, try to look over your roof at least twice a year. Check for damaged or missing shingles. Also, make sure to clean any gutter guards and downspouts so water can flow easily from the roof.
When it comes to a roof, you typically have a good idea of when to use homeowners insurance. For example, if your roof is in great condition and damage is caused by a what your insurance policy considers a covered peril (i.e. fire, wind, hail, etc.), there’s a decent chance a claim is in order. On the other hand, if the damage is due to wear and tear or poor maintenance, a claim denial may be on the way.
Prevent Water Leaks
At SERVPRO of North Irving, we are your experienced Dallas water damage restoration professionals. It’s one of the most common house problems out there. Luckily, there are several relatively easy tasks you can take on yourself to prevent a water and insurance mess:
- Properly caulk and seal showers and tubs.
- Inspect pipes for leaks and cracks (have pipes repaired or replaced if needed).
- In colder temperatures, insulate your pipes.
- If you use a sump pump, test it every year.
- Install sewer backwater valves in your drainpipes.
It’s worth noting that sewage backup, as well as the replacement and repair of sewer lines, tend to be excluded by insurance companies. But, some companies give the option to add specific endorsements that extend coverage to certain sewer issues.
Maintain Your Water Heater
Here’s the deal, water heater repairs and replacements are not usually covered by insurance. It’s also safe to say that if damage results from an old or malfunctioning water heater, your policy is not going to cover it. You have to stay on top of maintenance and replace equipment when necessary.
Depending on the manufacturer’s recommendations, test your pressure-relief valve and flush the tank on a regular basis. If you hear the unit making loud or strange noises or you see rust-colored water leaking out, there’s probably an issue. Also, if the water heater is around 10 years old, it may be time for a new unit.
Protect Your Foundation
Many insurance policies exclude problems caused by cracks in the foundation which means proper care is key. Ensure the soil around your house slopes away from the foundation (6 inches over a distance of 10 feet). Additionally, safeguard your foundation from excess water by pointing sprinkler systems away from the home.
If you start to notice signs of water in your basement (musty smell or water stains), apply water sealant to the walls and floors. Also, be on the lookout for evidence of mold. If it exists, it may be in your best interest to hire a Dallas mold remediation specialist. Mold is a pathogen that can be harmful to your health, so it’s better to be safe than sorry!
Care For Your Appliances and HVAC
In general, an insurance company is not going to cover claims involving the malfunction or the normal wear and tear of HVAC units and appliances. If there are issues, you usually have to either troubleshoot it on your own or hire a technician to make repairs. If your appliances shock you, it may be indicative of an electrical issue. Unless you are an electrician, it’s a smart idea to hire a professional to inspect.
While it’s true there’s not a one-size-fits-all care manual for all appliances and HVAC units, there is one task that’s consistently recommended by all manufacturers: On a regular basis, check for damaged hoses and replace them immediately. With an HVAC unit, don’t forget to replace all the hoses every five years.
Connect With A Dallas Professional To Handle Repairs And Inspections
As you’re probably well aware of, insurance companies vary in what they do and don’t cover. It is good to seek advice from an insurance agent or consultant to get a definite answer as to when to use homeowners insurance.
That being said, there is a chance your policy may cover various services offered by fire and water damage restoration companies. While wholly contingent upon the provisions of your policy, there could be coverage for services like biohazard cleanup, mold remediation, and fire and water damage inspection, cleanup, and restoration. It might also provide cover for reconstruction services as well.
How do we know all this? At SERVPRO, we’ve helped tons of customers navigate insurance claims related to our services. We accept all insurance and work with companies to ensure the claims process and paperwork go as smoothly as possible.

Your Yearly Home Inspection Checklist: Protection Against Water Damage in Dallas
6/21/2019 (Permalink)
Protect your home from water damage with these tips from Our Dallas SERVPRO professionals.
We hate to say it but water damage in the home is shockingly common. And, we’re not just talking about burst pipes and faulty appliances. It’s not unusual for a homeowner or renter to experience severe weather such as snow, rain, wind, and flooding.
Unfortunately, there’s nothing you can do if Mother Nature decides to crash at your place without asking; however, there are steps you can take to make her visit less taxing. Our Dallas water damage restoration specialists have put together a checklist that will help you to detect possible issues and better protect your home against a water disaster.
1. Inspect And Maintain The Exterior Of Your Dallas Home
Obviously, when it comes to weather, your home’s first line of defense is its exterior structure. If there is a weakness, water will surely find it. Luckily, there are some steps you can take to ensure your property is more water-resistant:
Check On Your Roof
No surprise here, right? Broken and missing shingles cause leaks, which can result in problems like unsightly damage and mold. Assess your roof condition at least twice a year and make repairs as necessary.
Also, clean gutter guards and downspouts (the pipe attached to the gutter) so debris doesn’t build up — water should always flow freely from the roof. Additionally, position downspouts so water is directed away from the home.
Of course, it might be worth your while to have a professional inspect for water damage since some complications are more hidden than others.
Make Sure Windows Are Sealed
Varying temperatures and years of use can negatively affect window frames and seals. What’s more, some windows are simply victims of poor design. It’s a smart idea to caulk and seal your windows to keep liquid out.
Inspect Sprinkler Systems
If you have a sprinkler system, make sure it’s turned away from your house so it’s not causing water to collect near the foundation and walls. This can weaken structural integrity.
2. Fortify Your Basement and Foundation
It’s not difficult for water to find its way into your basement. After all, basements are usually below ground and under constant pressure from water-soaked soil. Verify the ground slopes away from the foundation at about 6 inches over 10 feet of distance.
If your basement has a damp smell, water stains, mold, or any evidence of water seepage, there may be problems with your floor slabs or foundation. The remedy can involve applying water sealant to the walls and floors; however, you may find additional assistance is needed such as sump pump installation (to pump water out of the foundation) or mold remediation.
Keep in mind a water damage inspection can aid in pinpointing issues and formulating the right plans of action.
3. Know and Maintain Your Plumbing Systems
Your plumbing system just wants a little love and understanding, and it doesn’t take much to show it you care:
- Check pipes for leaks and cracks.
- In times of cold weather, take steps to protect your pipes from freezing.
- Locate your main water shut-off valve and know how to use it in the case of a broken pipe or other water emergencies.
- Ensure showers and tubs are well caulked and sealed. Generally speaking, a good seal should last at least five years.
Moreover, if your area is susceptible to floods, there is a chance excessive water can cause sewage backup in drainpipes. If this material invades your home, a water damage inspection service may also need to perform biohazard cleanup. Fortunately, installing a sewer backwater valve in the drainpipe can help. Typically, this valve utilizes a flapper to direct sewage out and prevent it from flowing back in.
4. Take Care Of Your Appliances and HVAC
The importance of this is twofold: It prevents appliances and HVAC units from leaking, and it keeps you from having to shell out your hard-earned dough for new equipment. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know that a leaking appliance can damage the home. But, what is less thought about is how flooding can destroy appliances and HVAC systems.
Preventative measures are key! Make sure to inspect appliance hoses at least once a year. Replace any damaged hoses as soon as possible, but also make it a habit to change out all the hoses every five years. If you can, elevate your HVAC unit, washer, and dryer to at least one foot above the base flood elevation (BFE). BFEs are shown on Flood Insurance Rate Maps and dictate the floodproofing/elevation requirements of buildings.
5. Safeguard Your Possessions
Whether it’s because of investment or sentimental value, everyone has items and trinkets that mean something special to them. Certainly, it’s hard to completely secure your home and belongings from a water event, but there are things you can do to help mitigate your losses:
- DON’T store valuables in an area where there’s an increased risk of water damage.
- DON’T place items on basement floors; use elevated shelves.
- DO store items you’re not regularly using in waterproof containers.
- DO store your essential documents in waterproof containers or an offsite safe
- DO perform an inventory of your possessions and keep a record of them with lists, photos, and videos. This might support an insurance claim!
6. Hire a Dallas Professional To Perform A Water Damage Inspection
We touched upon this a bit earlier, but it bears repeating: Sometimes, expert advice is needed. It’s nothing against you or your abilities; it’s just that a trained eye may see signs of trouble that you don’t. This is especially true when mold and sewage are lurking about.

DIY First Aid Kit for Dallas Emergencies
6/7/2018 (Permalink)
A DIY First Aid Kit is simple to build and should be part of your Dallas home's emergency preparedness plan.
First aid kits are a must for emergency preparedness. Whether you have a small cut or you are preparing for a serious emergency situation, a first aid kit can help.
First Aid Kit Supplies
Your DIY first aid kit can be held in a waterproof case or bag. We recommend putting your kit’s items into a waterproof material such as plastic. This avoids your items from becoming wet and ruined.
Waterproof cases are easy to find in the fishing supply section of a general or sports store.
- 2 compress dressings (5 x 9 inches)
- 25 band-aids (different sizes)
- First aid tape
- Antibiotic ointment; many people prefer the triple antibiotic ointment
- Hydrocortisone ointment
- Aspirin; also include baby aspirin if needed
- Ibuprofen
- Instant cold pack
- 2 pair of medical gloves (non-latex); many times these gloves are called nitrile gloves
- Oral thermometer
- Scissors
- Tweezers
- 2 roller bandages (different widths)
- 2 elastic bandages
- 10 sterile gauze pads (different sizes)
- 2 triangular bandages (for making slings)
- First aid instruction booklet, printable - print this basic first aid manual here.
Dallas Emergency Preparedness Plan
A first aid kit should be part of your overall emergency preparedness plan.
But when you are preparing for an incoming storm and your preparedness plan needs to take into account the possibility of evacuation or your entire home being affected, there are other things in need of consideration to be prepared.
1. Emergency Preparedness Documents for Natural Disasters
When you need to evacuate your home, it’s important for you to carry important documentation. This documentation includes medical records, identification, and other items that prove who you are and what your possessions are.
Keeping these documents on your body will prevent them from accidentally getting destroyed at home. One thing you should not have to worry about is contacting various government agencies while your insurance company is asking you for paperwork to process your claim.
2. How to Build a Home Inventory of Household Items
An inventory of your household items is one of the important documents we recommend you carry with you. While the idea of doing your own home inventory may sound silly (after all, you know what’s in your own home!), it’s one of the important pieces of documentation in the event of a serious disaster, like a fire or tornado.
A home inventory helps prove to your insurance company what items were in your home that is now either too burnt to identify or have disappeared if your home was damaged. When it comes time to estimate replacement costs, only you can prove how much your items were worth.
3. Family Communications Plan During Natural Disasters
If a serious emergency happens in your area, your family may be separated. Having a family communications plan in place can help everyone meet in a safe location after the storm. Don’t depend on phone lines to work consistently during events like these.
4. Hurricane Emergency Kit
This is a kit made with a hurricane situation in mind. The needs for a hurricane are slightly different than other storms.

Emergency Preparedness Documents For Natural Disasters
During a disaster situation such as a hurricane, a document bag is an important part of your emergency preparedness kit. You may find you’ll need these documents if you are sheltering in place or evacuating.
Whether you are sheltering in place in a storm shelter or evacuating, keep these documents on you. We recommend you place them in a waterproof sealable, plastic bag.
Emergency Preparedness Kit - Documentation
- Document Bag
- Current photo ID for all members of your group
- Birth certificates
- Social security cards
- Passports
- Photos of all members of your group, including pets

Emergency Preparedness Plan
When you are preparing for an incoming storm and your preparedness plan needs to take into account the possibility of evacuation or your entire home being affected, there are other things in need of consideration to be prepared.
1. DIY First Aid Kit
A first aid kit does not need to be fancy or bought in the store. If you want to make one yourself, buy what goes inside in bulk and resupply as you need. We recommend you place your first aid kit items in a waterproof container like a plastic box or bag.
We recommend building a DIY kit for your home and each vehicle you own.
An inventory of your household items is one of the important documents we recommend you carry with you. While the idea of doing your own home inventory may sound silly (after all, you know what’s in your own home!), it’s one of the important pieces of documentation in the event of a serious disaster, like a fire or tornado.
A home inventory helps prove to your insurance company what items were in your home that are now either too burnt to identify or have disappeared if your home was damaged. When it comes time to estimate replacement costs, only you can prove how much your items were worth.

How to Build a Home Inventory of Your Dallas Household Items
6/7/2018 (Permalink)
A home inventory of your household items is a valuable tool you will use if your property ever needs disaster restoration. (Photo credit: FEMA).
How to Build a Home Inventory of Your Household Items
Why build an inventory of household items?
The reason to have a home inventory is simple. Ask yourself this: if a water damage or a fire damage affected your home, could you make a list for your insurance company of all the lost items? Do you know what all your household items are worth?
Most people cannot remember everything they have in their home.
Homeowners Insurance and Contents Insurance
When natural disasters such as floods, fires, or tornadoes happen, properties are affected and many household items are damaged. To replace your household items, your home insurance company may ask for an inventory of your household contents. The household inventory will help in valuing your items and coming up with a replacement cost.
SERVPRO will inventory all the items we find on your property. When a fire damage happens, it is sometimes possible to identify a burnt item and report it to your insurance company. Unfortunately, some items are burnt so badly that identification is impossible.
Without an inventory or proof of your items having existed, your claim may not be fulfilled to your satisfaction.
Before any disaster happens, having an accurate home inventory will help you know how much home content insurance you should purchase. Do this for peace of mind. Should anything ever happen, you will be able to file a claim to replace all lost items.
Use Technology to Inventory your Household Items
A phone or video camera will make this process quick. We recommend you use video to capture general documentation all your items. Then, use photos to capture smaller and important details such as serial numbers and brands.
How to Inventory A Room Using Video
- Choose a room in your home. Start on the left of the room and pan the camera up and down. Slowly working your way clockwise until you’ve captured the entire room.
- If you need to open drawers or closet doors to show more of your contents, go ahead and do that.
- Don’t forget items you may have somewhere else, like a storage unit.
Write Down Inventory Details and Backup Your Claim with Photos
Now it’s time to write down important information about the items you recorded. For example:
- If you recorded a TV, write down the name and model or serial number and take a picture of these details.
- If you recorded clothing, write down:
- The quantity of each type of clothing e.g. dress shirts, t-shirts, shoes, pants, etcetera.
- Clothing of high value should have its brand recorded. If you want to prove bag was Prada, for example, take a close picture of the Prada tag.
Are Jewelry and Art Covered in my Home Insurance?
Items like jewelry and art may require you to increase your insurance. This is done through personal property coverage or add endorsements or floaters to your homeowners insurance. Check with your insurance company to make your valuables are covered. If you need extra insurance to cover high end items, your insurance will provide you with instructions.
Have Proof of Value
Keep sales receipts and appraisals in hand to provide your insurance company proof of purchase and value. Add these documents to your emergency preparedness bag.
Backup your Files and Update your Inventory
- Keep your recordings and receipts on a cloud-based system to make sure they’re never lost.
- For paperwork, look for free apps on Android and iOS to scan paperwork and convert it to a digital file. Save it to secure online storage.
- Never rely on printed documentation as your only source of proof. What would you do if that paperwork got damaged in a disaster?
- As you make more significant purchases, update your list.
Take your home inventory system seriously! There are two unfortunate situations we see often. One is a homeowner valuing an item much higher than their insurance is willing to accept. The second situation is when a homeowner claims they had an item but they can’t prove it existed. This almost always forces the insurance company to deny that part of their claim. This happens simply because the homeowner did not have adequate documentation of an items’ existence, authenticity, or appraisal.
Our Role in the Dallas Water and Fire Damage Restoration Process
We have worked with many homes and businesses affected by a water damage, fire damage, flooding, and tornadoes. One of our first tasks is to create a home inventory of all items found on the property. We search every room until we have found every item we possibly can.
We divide items into two categories:
Salvageable Items are those that are intact and can be cleaned. We pack those items and take them back to our cleaning facility. They are sanitized and brought back to its former condition. While your home is reconstructed, we store them in our storage facility. When you are able to receive those items back, they are delivered at your convenience.
Fire clean up that we have successfully done include:
- Furniture
- Clothing - we get the fire smoke out of clothes
- Electronics
- Toys
- Anything attached to the home itself (structure clean up)
Unsalvageable Items are those that can be identified but have been destroyed permanently. These items cannot be cleaned and we recommend be thrown away. Our technicians document these items and report to your insurance company.
What about items that can’t be identified? This is where your home inventory plays a vital role in your claim.
Only you can prove to your insurance carrier what items were in your home.

Dallas Family Emergency Communication Plan
6/7/2018 (Permalink)
Do I Need a Family Communications Plan? Yes! It's better to be prepared than not. (Photo credit: FEMA).
Family Emergency Communication Plan
The best time to prepare for a disaster is before anything has happened. Ask yourself:
- What if something happens and I’m separated from my family?
- How will I be able to reach my family?
Having a communication plan with your family may help you reunite with your loved ones. You can plan ahead of time how to reach each other and where you will meet.
Text Messages Are More Reliable than Calls
During storms, text messages are more reliable than phone calls since phone lines are often overloaded. This does not guarantee your text goes through, but it has a better chance of working.
What Should My Family Communication Include?
Meeting Places
- What neighborhood place can you all go to meet up? Include its name, address, and number.
- Who is a local person that can provide a place to meet up? Include their name, address, and number.
- Who is out-of-town that can provide a place to meet up? Include their name, address, and number.
Likely Places to Be
Also, consider where your family spends a lot of time; they may still be at this location when an emergency happens.
- Work
- School
- Other (daycare, gym, friend’s house)
Have each place’s address and phone number.
If the general phone line is busy, call someone else that you know inside to verify the whereabouts of your loved one.
Pet Emergency Kit
If you have pets, make sure these places are all willing to take in your furry little one. Think about what items your pet will need to be safe and comfortable while you’re away from home. Examples include:
- Food
- Water
- Food bowls
- Leash
- Kennel
- Vaccination records
- Cat litter with box
- Medications
Other Emergency Preparedness Considerations
- If you know a storm is coming, have you prepared your home? Read our article about home preparedness here.
- Is your car ready? Does it have its own First Aid Kit? Is it filled with gas?
- Which car will you pick people up in? Remember to also take your pets with you.
- Who will pick up whom? If you’ll be riding in multiple cars, consider making a map for each person’s pick up route.
- Do you have go bags ready? If you know there is a chance of a storm, consider packing a go bag ahead of time and keeping it with you. Take necessary items only.
- If the roadways are at risk of flooding, how soon will you choose to gather your family?
Where to Keep Your Emergency Plan
Keep a copy of this plan in your emergency preparedness documents bag.
Also, give a copy to everyone involved in it so they can keep it in their bag or backpack. It’s a good idea to keep this paper in a sealed plastic bag or even laminating it to make sure its resistant to water.
Don’t just keep a digital copy on your phone! If you found yourself with a source of electricity and your phone’s battery died, what would you do? Go old school and keep it on paper.
Other Dallas Emergency Preparedness Considerations
Build a hurricane emergency supply kit. This checklist will quickly tell you which items you should be prepared to have and breaks it down by category.
Build a DIY first aid kit. A first aid does not have to be fancy. In fact, we recommend buying these items in bulk and simply restocking your kit when necessary. It also makes it easier and more affordable to have more than one kit in your inventory.
Prepare a home inventory of your household items. Your insurance provider will need proof of items you are claiming to have been destroyed or lost. Only you can provide proof of your claim.
Create a family communications plan. Help your family prepare for plans A, B, and C in case of an emergency. Don't rely on figuring out details on the spot.

If you have a disability, consider signing up for the Texas Emergency Assistance Registry Program (STEAR).

What to Include in A Dallas Hurricane Emergency Kit
6/7/2018 (Permalink)
Having your Hurricane Emergency Kit ready before the storm hits can save you valuable time. (Photo credit: FEMA)
What to Include in A Hurricane Emergency Kit
Start your emergency supply kit with what you already have at home and then shop for the rest. Put items into waterproof ziplock bags and then place small items into a backpack. This will make your kit waterproof and easy to carry.
As you prepare your home for a hurricane, know that many other people will, too. It’s best to stock up early to avoid a run on supplies. Home hardware stores and other retail stores tend to run out of food and supplies as many people in the community rush to prepare.
Don’t depend on your local store being able to restock soon. If roads are damaged or flooded, stores may not be restocked frequently or at all throughout the duration of the storm. This was very common during Hurricane Harvey when our own cleanup and restoration crews had to purchase and load our supply trailers with items from Dallas due to a shortage in Houston and Galveston.
Emergency Food Supply -- Food and Water
- 3 day supply of food that doesn’t need cooking e.g. canned food
- Can opener
- 1 gallon of water per day for each person
- Baby items e.g. food, bottles, formula, diapers
Emergency First Aid Kit and Medications
- DIY First Aid Kit
- Prescriptions
- Hand sanitizer and wipes
- Toilet paper and garbage bags
- Dental care and vision products
- Soaps
- Diapers
- Sunscreen
- Insect repellent
- N-95 face masks in case of contaminated air - home hardware stores sell these
Family Emergency Communication Plan
Remember: during storms, text messages are more reliable than phone calls since phone lines are often overloaded. This does not guarantee your text goes through, but it has a better chance of working.
- Battery operated radio or hand crank radio
- Extra batteries
- Cell phone batteries
- Car Charger
- Matches
- Whistle
- Glasses/sunglasses
- Completed emergency preparedness documents bag - place in a sealable plastic bag
Pet Emergency Kit
- 3 day supply of food, water, and bowls
- Medications
- Vaccination records and photos - place in a sealable plastic bag
- Crate
- Leash and toy
- Cat Litter with box
Are you Sheltering in Place?
Unless required to evacuate, many people choose to stay home and shelter in place. Before the storm arrives, make sure to do the following:
- Replace the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
- Have a fire extinguisher.
- Purchase plastic sheeting (we recommend 6mm) and duct tape to seal off doors, windows, and air vents in case of contaminated air. There is specialty tape that will stick to most surfaces. Make sure to buy the right kind so you don’t run the risk of your containment coming off.
- Prepare your home ahead of time by bringing in loose, outdoor objects. This will help you avoid windborne debris damage.
- Trim tree branches likely to fall onto your property.
- Clean gutters and drains. When its raining hard, the water needs to have a place to go. If your storm drains and gutters are clogged, that water will pool on your roof and eventually find its way into your home.
If your property is prone to flooding and you have a second story, consider moving your valuables upstairs to keep them from being damaged. During Hurricane Harvey, we met many homeowners who saved their home’s contents by doing exactly this.
Are you under a Dallas mandatory evacuation order?
Don’t wait until you’ve been ordered to go to start collecting your belongings. Prepare ahead of time by having the following ready:
- Car repair tool kit
- Roadmaps
- Plastic plates, cups, and utensils
- Blankets, pillows
- Tent
- Clothes and waterproof shoes
- Rain gear
- Towels
- Toys, non-electronic
Other Emergency Preparedness Considerations
- Sign up for alerts from your county’s office of emergency management (OEM) for the latest storm news.
- Download the FEMA App for evacuation routes and shelter locations
- Complete a home inventory of your household items to help your insurance company's claim should a disaster happen.
Other Emergency Preparedness Considerations
- Build a hurricane emergency supply kit
- Build a DIY first aid kit
- Prepare a home inventory of your household items
- Create a family communications plan
- Sign up to receive alerts from your county’s office of emergency management and FEMA
- If you have a disability, consider signing up for the Texas Emergency Assistance Registry Program (STEAR)

Full Service Dallas Water Fire Restoration Company
12/14/2017 (Permalink)
SERVPRO's Full Service 3 Expert Team has all the answers. It is designed to simplify projects and help reduce customer stress.
“Policyholders are happier with fewer points of contact on a claim.”
That’s the point that a survey from J.D. Power & Associates proved (“How Homeowners Really Feel”).
It’s easy to understand why this is true. When our customers call us, chances are that something bad has happened. A water damage. A fire damage. Mold problems in their kitchen or attic.
Stress is likely to be higher than usual, and our customers want the damage to be fixed and their lives to go back to normal. They want it, “Like it never even happened.”
Yet, when a typical water damage or fire damage occurs, the following representatives are called into place:
- Homeowners insurance company
- Insurance adjuster
- Public adjuster
- Vendor technicians
- Vendor management
- insurance liaison
- textile cleaner technicians
- textile cleaner management
- textile insurance liaison
- reconstruction crews
- reconstruction management
- reconstruction insurance liaison...
The list can go on and on. It becomes very difficult to coordinate all those appointments, names, and companies. How is someone supposed to keep track of all the expenses and timelines happening at once -- especially when that someone still has a full-time job and kids?
We Are Your One Call.
Our company has serviced Dallas for over 30 years. We started out by simply cleaning carpets, but we quickly grew into more. Over the years, we have asked our customers how we could be a better restoration company for them. The overwhelming answer was that they just wanted us to be able to take care of more of their insurance claim. We listened.
We can now handle:
Dallas Residential Services
Commercial Services
Dallas Commercial air duct cleaning
We are now one of the advanced disaster restoration contractors in North Texas. In fact, less than a handful of other businesses in Dallas can handle clothing and textile restoration cleaning.
Being able to offer all of these services has to make the life of our customers easier and better. That’s the point after all.
We’ve now taken it one step further and organized a Full Service 3 Expert Team for each of our customers. While each customer’s project may end up utilizing the services of dozens of people, they just need to know the one person they can contact when they have a question and get help.
Full Service 3 Expert Team in Dallas
Whenever you need information about your project, you can contact our 3 expert team that is managing your project from start to end. This group consists of:
- Job File Coordinator
- Project Manager
- Reconstruction Manager (if necessary)
Project File Coordinator
This expert will work with your insurance company to process your claim. They handle all documentation and paperwork your insurance adjuster needs to cover your claim. In fact, our project file coordinators speak with adjusters the majority of the day and have built great relationships with many of them. We believe it’s important to keep a sense of urgency in the entire team to make sure you get back home as soon as possible.
“Do you take my insurance?” is a common question we get.
YES. We routinely work with all insurance carriers.
“What if my insurance company tells me to use another restoration company?”
While your insurance company or insurance adjuster can suggest you use a specific restoration company, they cannot legally make that decision for you. Just tell them you’d rather have SERVPRO handle your claim, and we will. We have helped customers switch restoration companies on many occasions. We will handle the details.
Project Manager
This expert will handle every aspect of the fire and water damage restoration portion of your project. They are the go-to person for:
- Water damage restoration and drying

A Day in the Life: Christi, Dallas SERVPRO Sales
4/18/2017 (Permalink)
Christi Robinson, Sales Representative for SERVPRO of in Dallas, Texas.
“Good morning!” is what Christi says as soon as she walks into the marketing and sales office. She’s greeting Gracie, the office pet. A few moments later, Christi is at her desk, and the day’s work begins.
“One part of my job is to finish estimates, lead crews on some projects, and complete follow-up visits,” Robinson explains. This is what she’s scheduling before 8 A.M. before the crews arrive and the entire office begins to hum with the day’s excitement. For a few quiet minutes each morning, it’s just Christi and Gracie checking emails and preparing. Then, Christi is gone to the daily Work-In-Progress meeting, and by 8:30, she’s out the door to the day’s fieldwork.
The Work in Progress is a mandatory daily morning meeting for every member of the company. Here, production managers update everyone on each job’s progress and what work they expect to be completed today. As with all emergency services companies, we also make plans to have crews available for the next water damage or fire damage emergency. In less than half an hour, everyone has received their instructions for the day and they’re out the door with Christi right behind them.
When Christi is not in the field working with a customer, she’s at the office preparing, sometimes with the rest of the marketing team. “My other responsibilities are to market to old and new clients and assisting with social media.” Most of our office’s candid employee shots on our social media accounts have been taken by Christi. She’s well known around the office for her ability to capture someone in their best light.
She’s also known in the field for her ability to connect with customers. “People, no matter what their social status, are vulnerable in time of need.” She keeps this in mind as she works with people experiencing a disaster at their property. “They want an open ear or a shoulder to lean on when going through a loss. That’s what I try to provide for them throughout their entire project. It’s what they deserve.”
Between water and fire damages, mold remediation, general cleaning, and now with textile cleaning added to our list of services, Christi’s day can be unpredictable.
A typical day can involve visiting customers waiting for a cleaning bid, but when a customer calls in with an emergency mold growth situation or a fire damage happening at their property, Christi has to quickly react and head to their property. Some days require her to be out in the field until the late evening.
It’s the life of a sales representative in an emergency restoration company. “Every day is like opening a present--it’s something new and interesting. It keeps me motivated.”
After years with our company, success is still defined by one thing for Christi. “A smile. I’m fulfilled when we can make our customers smile.”
Our sales representatives are available for free estimates.

A Day in the Life: Julie, SERVPRO Accountant
11/29/2016 (Permalink)
Julie Goguen, Accountant for SERVPRO of North Irving in Dallas Texas.
A Day in the Life: Julie, SERVPRO Accountant
She’s been working for at least an hour before most people have taken their first sip of coffee -- not that she’ll take any if you offer her some. “Dr Pepper is my caffeine, but not until lunchtime,” she says. “Hot fries do wake me up, but I can’t have those for breakfast, can I?”
She laughs. She’s always in a good mood, which is what she’s known for around the office along with her ability to be everyone’s friend.
And here we find what might be one of the few extroverted accountants in the world. And the bravest.
There was once a loud bang outside the office. When everyone either cowered around their desks or ran to the back of the building, Julie was the only one that ran out the front door. It turned out a car was backfiring.
She also stopped a robbery at a department store one random Tuesday evening, but that’s a story for another day.
Julie is married with three kids and a few dogs at home. We think they have a pretty normal life, but they might be The Incredibles trying country living for a while until the world needs them again. We’ll see.
What we know with certainty is that Julie is the Keeper of Keys for our office. She knows the name of every client that’s needed our help in the past year. She knows every tax identification number by heart. Due dates and phones numbers are ingrained in her memory. Birthdays, anniversaries and special occasions are stored in mind, too.
She comes in early, stays late, answers messages in the evening, two, five, or six in the morning, keeps our books updated, our ratios comfortable, and our vendors alert of our changing needs. Her department is a well-oiled machine.
And, sometimes, if you call us at 3 in the morning, she’ll be the on-call manager picking up your call.
If you ever hear her say, “If you don’t turn in your receipt, I’m not going to give you the reimbursement. That’s final,” you know she’s talking to the owner. It happens.
A while back, she saw the movie The Accountant and said, “I can do better,” and no one questioned her.
And, sometimes, yes, she sneaks in some hot fries in the morning.

Our Dallas Professionals Don't Follow Your Typical ABCs of Sales
11/29/2016 (Permalink)
SERVPRO's Dallas sales representatives make sure every client's job is going well.
We know the other one: Always Be Closing. Well, we do things differently around here.
Our perspective comes from a critical aspect of our job, and that is that our customers reach out to us on some of the most horrible days of their lives. When half of someone’s house is full of water or they just had a fire, they don’t want a pitch. They don’t want a price list. They want their life restored, and that’s what our responsibility becomes.
So, when that call comes, even if it’s at 3 A.M., we show up, take our client’s hand, and start to help them get through what is going to be a very emotional time in their life. There’s going to be a lot of people coming into their home. There’s going to be movement. Machines. Noise.
In the middle of everything, we let them know everything is going to be okay.
Our team works in tandem to make sure of that.
Back at the office, a Job File Coordinator is assigned to our new customer. They make contact with the person’s insurance company immediately and start the claims process going. This person works with the insurance adjuster every day to make sure different portions of the claim are approved and that the work gets done quickly. We know our customers just want their homes back. We want that, too.
Outside the office, there is always a flurry of activity. A Restoration Manager is also assigned to our new customer. Their job is to perform all restoration services they need. This includes:
Emergency Roof Tarp and Board Up
When a customer’s property is damaged, one of our first acts is to install a temporary roof tarp and install board ups on damaged windows, doors, and even walls. This prevents the weather from coming in and causing more damage. It also keeps away unauthorized persons and theft. These emergency services are usually needed in an event of a fire damage or storm damage.
Water Damage Services
We’ve seen water damages of all types. From washing machine leaks to flooded basements with standing water, to a burst pipe in the middle of winter or any other water damage emergency, we are your Dallas water damage restoration experts. Our technicians will perform water removal services, sanitation, and drying. They will set up professional water clean up equipment according to the square foot that has been affected by the water leak.
Our professional equipment includes axial fans and dehumidifiers to make sure the house begins to dry properly and quickly. We will also determine if the source of the leak produced clean water or black water, and we will sanitize the area accordingly. We visit the home every day to make sure our equipment is running smoothly and that our drying plan is advancing to goal. Our efforts ensure the structure is dry and help prevent mold growth and mold damage. All data we collect is sent to your adjuster to help process your insurance claim.
Fire Restoration
Fire damage restoration involves multiple steps. Fire and water damages often go hand in hand because of firefighting efforts. While emergency fire clean up service are done, we also head inside and inspect the damage. This is when we start water damage restoration services, and we also come up with our fire damage restoration process.
The process is unique for every home we visit. Our Dallas fire damage restoration professionals will remove all debris from the home, take care of fire and smoke odor removal, and deodorization. Just as important is taking care of everything inside the home, like households items and clothing. We will inventory everything and take it back to our cleaning facility for sanitation, smoke odor removal, and storage.
Mold Removal
We have a Texas Mold Remediation Contractor license and we routinely help homes with their mold remediation needs. Our Dallas mold remediation experts will perform a mold inspection on the property and come up with a process to remove it. We always follow Texas Mold Law.
Reconstruction
Meanwhile, our reconstruction team is getting prepared to rebuild any portion of the home that was permanently damaged. They also work with the insurance adjuster to make sure everything that is needed is covered by the claim.
Our entire company works in-sync and always for the benefit of our customer.
That’s why everyone meets every morning for a Work In Progress (WIP) meeting to talk about every client job. We make sure we’re all on the same page and know and meet our objectives every day.
Additionally, every Tuesday morning, the sales and marketing department has a meeting that no one is allowed to miss--ever. Not even the owner is allowed to miss it. Our sole purpose is to bring our files and discuss how each and every one of our clients are doing. Our questions are simple:
- What happened at their home?
- How quickly did we respond?
- Did we address all of their concerns and questions?
- Did we make it "Like it never even happened.” ?
- Are they safe in their home?
- Are they happy?
If the last answer is no, we know our job is not done. We won’t stop until the customer is happy.
Because we care.

A Day in the Life: Megan Troup, SERVPRO Sales
11/2/2016 (Permalink)
Megan Troup is a sales representative at SERVPRO of North Irving in Dallas, Texas.
A Day in the Life of Sales Representative Megan Troup
A typical day for Megan Troup begins at her desk in the marketing offices at 7:30. She checks her day's schedule and makes sure she knows where she's heading for the day. At 8 A.M., she's promptly at the day's Work-In-Progress meeting, working with production management and making sure her clients' jobs are going as planned. By 8:30, she's making a few phone calls and by 9:00, she's out the door. She wishes everyone a happy day and out she goes.
Sometimes she doesn't stop until 10 or 11 that night. When she’s the On-Call Manager and a customer needs her at 2 A.M., she’s up for that, too.
A marketing representative’s job isn’t about route sales. It’s about meeting customer when they call into our office requesting bids, making sure clients’ current jobs are exceeding expectations, and finding new customers that may not know how SERVPRO can help.
When asked about her experience, Megan had this to say, “Each day on the job is different than the last--and all have proven to be equally fulfilling. Getting to meet new people every day is exciting, and helping put people's' lives back in order is rewarding beyond measure.”
Water Damage Services are Unique to Each Home
At our office, no two days are ever alike for anyone. While every person has specific goals and tasks they are responsible for completing, the variety of customer needs makes every job unique and challenging.
For example, let’s say we get 2 new water damages in a span of 10 minutes. Customer A is located in Dallas, has a ranch style home, and half of it is flooded with sewage.
Customer B is a townhouse in Plano and the neighbor’s overflowing bathtub is now filling his upstairs bedroom with water.
Both are water damages, but both need different techniques and skills to completely correct. And in the next hour or so, we’ll also receive requests for mold inspections, carpet cleaning, and a fire damage.
On a day like this, Megan would typically fulfill her day’s already set schedule and then run to complete the mold inspections and carpet cleaning bids. Later that evening, she would review her notes on her bids and send the estimates to her clients. The next morning, she’d follow up with those clients, answer their questions, and the process would repeat itself.
Around here we like to joke that if we’re not sprinting from the morning until the evening, then it’s been a slow day.
Megan continued, “Each job provides a unique situation with a new set of problems and solutions to gain knowledge from for future use. The learning is progressive which keeps my interest level high.”
Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) & Other Training
Our sales representatives don’t just study sales techniques at our office. Each of them is also uniquely qualified and understand the restoration industry. After all, their job isn’t to sell you a product, it’s to educate you about what’s happening in your home.
Our representatives begin their career with us by studying all of SERVPRO’s Employee Certification courses. After they have passed those, they move on to get training and certification from the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration certification (IICRC). Our representatives also take Texas Mold classes to become mold workers.
“I have certainly used my knowledge gained while working here with SERVPRO while handling issues in my personal day-to-day life,” Megan said. “I look forward to many more work anniversary celebrations in years to come with SERVPRO!”
Megan's drive for her job comes from her passion to help those that have experienced a loss. When Megan responds to a call, what she is looking to do is provide a way to put that person's home back together. For Megan, the job becomes a personal mission to help -- to make it “Like it never even happened.”
The job isn’t done until our core statement is true.
