Sewage Cleanup: Why It’s Important to Clean Your System

11/15/2019 (Permalink)

Before the invention of indoor and outdoor plumbing systems, millions of people died from contaminated water and bacterial infections. Luckily, today, these diseases have been mostly eradicated. Plumbing systems work silently in the background to keep us safe, and our homes and communities clean. But what happens when sewage systems back up and sewage cleanup becomes a code red on your to-do list?

Sewage is a biohazard and considered a Category 3 Blackwater, posing significant risks to your health. When sewage systems go awry, it must be dealt with efficiently, safely, and fast. Sewage cleanup is a labor-intensive and dangerous job. Homeowners should not attempt to clean up sewage unless it’s a tiny spill. Call a plumber and sewage cleanup specialist as soon as possible if you’re having problems with your system. Here’s what you need to know about caring for your sewage system so that you can prevent costly repairs in the future.

Why is it Important to Clean Your Sewage System Regularly?

For homeowners, plumbing and septic systems are easy to overlook. These critical systems hardly give us any trouble, and it’s easy to forget about them while they work in the background, on autopilot, and silently. Most people don’t even think about their septic system unless something goes wrong. But a malfunctioning septic system can be an absolute nightmare to deal with. Sewage problems are not only costly to fix; they are a hazard to one’s health and property. While your septic system is working below ground to keep you and your home clean and safe, problems could be forming beneath the surface. Regular maintenance can prevent septic issues.

Clean the Drains to Maintain Sewage System Integrity

A clogged pipe is the most common problem that your septic system will face if it’s not maintained correctly. As the months and years pass, debris will build up along the sides of the pipes. If water is taking way too long to drain, it could be indicating either a clogged pipe or a sewer system backup.

A professional should clean and inspect the property’s drains at least every two years. Why, you ask? Well, checking the drains at this interval ensures that any small problems are caught before they become big problems. A clogged drain that goes left unnoticed can cause significant damage to your home if it’s not fixed. Some signs of impending drain trouble include:

  • Strange noises coming from the drains (such as gurgling or knocking sounds)
  • Sink and shower drains that take too long to work
  • Appliances like dish and clothes washers taking too long to drain

While it’s a good idea to have a professional inspect the drains every two years, drains can become clogged in between these inspections. Homeowners can take steps to prevent drain issues in the meantime:

  • Never rinse greasy, oily, or corrosive substances down the drains
  • Do not flush solid objects down the toilet (paper towels, wipes, etc.)
  • Use natural cleaners to remove minor drain clogs

Even wipes that say “flushable” should never be flushed down the toilet. Creating a drain cleaner of baking soda and white vinegar can clear and clean the drains in-between plumbing inspections.

Clean the System to Prevent Bacterial Contamination

If the sewage system gets backed up with clogged pipes and slow drains, bacteria has a perfect pathway into your home. Even if the pipes are only partially blocked, this gives pathogens the ideal environment to grow and multiply. Germs will gather within not just the shower and sink drains, but also in the appliances where you wash your dishes and clothes. In some cases, bacteria can leach out of the sewage system and contaminate the groundwater on your property.

Worst case scenario? The sewage system will completely back up. Wastewater will make its way into your home, contaminating your floors and carpets. If this happens, you’ll need to evacuate the home until a sewage cleanup and restoration specialist and a plumber can fix the damage and decontaminate your house. Sewage backups can destroy a basement or a bathroom.

Clean the Sewage System and Prevent Damaged Drains

A clogged drain will make the plumbing systems corrode much more quickly than usual. With regular septic maintenance, you can extend the life of the pipes. Clogs will corrode the pipes rapidly, causing leaks that may go unnoticed for months. Fixing a leaking pipe takes time and money, and you may end up needing to replace flooring or drywall on top of it.

Another primary source of sewage system issues is pipe damage from tree roots. Tree roots will search for water, breaking through the pipes in search of moisture and nutrients. By regularly inspecting and cleaning your sewer system, you’ll be able to spot these issues before they become major headaches and hits to your wallet.

What do you do if you need sewage cleanup services?

Sewage spills can cause significant damage to your property and pose a health risk to you and your family. You’ll need to contact a sewage cleanup professional in Dallas immediately if your septic system fails. The longer the contaminated water is left to pool in the home, the higher the risk of severe water damage and disease.

How can a professional sewage cleanup specialist help?

Professional sewage cleaners have the skills, knowledge, and equipment to safely and appropriately remove unsafe blackwater from septic failures. They will clean and sanitize the home while decontaminating your property. If the home has water damage issues, a professional can perform necessary water damage restoration throughout the property as needed. In some cases, mold may form and pose another hazard on top of the sewage backup. Professional sewage cleaners can also remove mold and prevent future mold growth, keeping the air you breathe inside the home safe and clean.

What do sewage cleanup services cost? It depends on the extent of the damage and the size of the spill. On average, a sewage system cleanup can cost anywhere from $2000 to $10,000. If you need sewage cleanup services in Dallas, SERVPRO of North Irving can help. Contact us today to restore your home to its original condition.

Common HVAC Problems: Save on Electric Bills with Home Improvement

10/25/2019 (Permalink)

You rely on your HVAC heating and cooling systems to keep you and your family comfortable. When the air conditioner or furnace quits working, you notice. Coming home to a freezing home in winter or a stuffy house in summer indicates an obvious problem with the HVAC system. But sometimes, common HVAC problems are far more subtle. What happens when you let common HVAC problems go unnoticed? Well, these problems can cause a slow bleed to your bank account. When your HVAC system isn't working correctly, your electric bills will start going up. Learn how home improvement, cleaning your HVAC along with fixing common issues can lower your electric bills.

Who Are The Most Likely Culprits Causing Your Electric Bill To Go Up?

Unfortunately, there's no way around paying an electric bill. Using air conditioning in the summer months and heating your home during the winter can cause significant electrical use at certain times throughout the year. If you open this month's electric bill and find that it's far more than you're used to owing, then there might be something else going on. You'll want to identify what's causing the electric bill to go up and fix it. Fortunately, there are a lot of things that everyday Jane and Joe homeowner can do to fix common HVAC problems and lower their electric bill. But first, what are the most common reasons for sky-high electric bills?

  • Energy vampires
  • Leaving the lights and appliances on when they aren't needed
  • Using large appliances
  • Forgoing necessary home maintenance and home improvement
  • Forgetting to service the AC or heating units

Fixing common HVAC problems with the AC and heating units is one of the most effective ways to significantly lower your electric bills. Home maintenance and home improvement can make your home more energy-efficient, too.

Home Improvement and Maintenance to Lower Your Electric Bills

Every home can benefit from home improvement and maintenance when it comes to increasing energy efficiency. For older homes, especially, home improvement is critical. Newer builds are constructed with more energy-efficient materials. As homes age, window frames and door frames can sag and floors can slope. This natural wear and tear of the home can make it less airtight, and more prone to drafts. A drafty house will make your HVAC system work harder and less effectively. The result? A higher electric bill. The good news is, there's a lot that homeowners can do to maintain the property and make it more energy-efficient.

  • Seal windows and doors to cut down on drafts with caulking
  • Add weather stripping to the door thresholds to keep cool or warm air inside
  • Install window blinds or blackout curtains
  • Replace inefficient light bulbs with newer efficient models
  • Maintain and improve AC units

How HVAC Maintenance Fixes Common Problems

The HVAC system can be a major energy hog if it's not maintained correctly. You'll want to change your AC and furnace filters every three to nine months, depending on how often and how heavily you use the units. A general rule of thumb is to change them out every six months. Old, clogged filters will cause the HVAC system to run inefficiently. Luckily, this is a pretty easy and affordable fix!

You should also make sure the AC and heating vents are free of dust and debris buildup. Any obstructions will cause issues with the unit's efficiency, and your electric bills will increase. If there are any issues with the system's components, this can also make the unit hog electricity. This is why scheduling professional tune-ups and maintenance for your HVAC units is critical. A technician can uncover HVAC problems and fix them before they turn into a serious issue and become too costly for you to repair.

HVAC Operation for Lowering Your Electric Bills

How you operate the HVAC system will also impact how much you pay for electricity each month. Although it's really a matter of personal comfort, many HVAC systems have an ideal temperature range for maximum efficiency. How do you find out what that range is? Consult the owner's manual or ask an experienced HVAC technician. It's also a good idea to avoid wild swings where you set the temperature. Extreme fluctuations can cause the system to work harder and less efficiently. Also, putting a strain on the system can shorten the lifespan of your AC or furnace.

How the Thermostat Impacts the HVAC System

The thermostat plays a significant role in how well the HVAC system operates. Try to set the thermostat to the coldest temperature you can tolerate during the winter. On hot summer days, set the thermostat to the highest temperature you find comfortable. Not only will this lower your energy consumption, but it will also extend the lifespan of your HVAC system. It won't be working as hard to maintain indoor temperatures when the weather outside is extreme. Although this may seem insignificant, the impact it will have on your electric bills is substantial. By doing this, you can save 5 to 15% on your electricity bill every year.

Do you have room in your budget to install a programmable thermostat? Doing so can save you even more money on your electric bills. Old thermostats can also have worn out components that can make them less accurate and, therefore, less efficient. With a programmable thermostat, you can set the HVAC system to a certain temperature when nobody is home. Lowering the amount of heating or cooling you need when the house is empty will lower your energy bills, and also extend the lifespan of your unit.

Our HVAC Maintenance and Problems Bottom Line

Homeowners can do many things to maintain their HVAC and uncover common problems themselves. Regular, routine maintenance of the HVAC unit not only lowers your energy bills but can also save you money in other ways.

At SERVPRO North Irving, we can perform an air duct cleaning or HVAC cleaning service in your home to address any indoor air quality concerns and detect any possible HVAC problems. If you uncover a common problem early, fixing it is typically less expensive than if it had gone unnoticed for months or years. A well-maintained HVAC system will also last longer, which saves you money in the long run. Keep these HVAC and home improvement tips in mind to keep more money in your wallet!

Tools of the Trade: Common Household Tools Everyone Should Have

Tools of the Trade: Common Household Tools Everyone Should Have

 It’s DIY time, friends!

It’s true — we’re the folks you call when you’re in of need remediation, restoration, and cleaning services in Dallas. We step in when DIYing gets to be too much for the DIYer. But, we can still appreciate a good old-fashioned home project! And, we love imparting our knowledge to others (aka giving advice).

Today, we’re talking tools. When you own a home, repair and maintenance jobs often come up. In many cases, it doesn’t require expertise. But, it’s still important to be prepared.

If you’re like a plethora of other homeowners, you probably have a toolbox that you add to every now and then. As tasks come along, you look up what you need online and take a trip to the local home improvement store. There is certainly nothing wrong with this; however, we suggest always having a quality “base” of tools. Of course, we’ll explain which items are essential to have at the ready.

1. Measuring Tools

You know how the old saying goes — measure twice, cut once. Correct measurements are at the crux of most DIY projects. A mistake can result in a lot of lost time and money. At a minimum, you should have a couple of measuring tools:

Tape Measure

You’ve probably used flexible measuring tape before. We suggest using one that’s 15 to 25 feet long.

Combination Square

This is a multi-purpose measuring tool is a sliding ruler with interchangeable heads. It helps in assuring the integrity of angles. You typically find it at 12 inches long.

3. Level

This guy is all about — you guessed it — leveling. A level tool is key in everything from hanging a picture all the way up to positioning major appliances.

4. Hammer

We’re willing to bet you have a hammer in your toolbox already, but it’s worth the reminder that it’s a crucial tool. You know how it works — it’s needed for constructing, hanging, and prying items as well as demoing. No homeowner should be without one.

5. Screwdrivers

Screws are used in almost everything. Whether you’re putting items together or taking them apart, a screwdriver is indispensable. In the very least, you should have a Phillips head (pointed tip) and a flat-head (flat tip) screwdriver.

6. Stud Finder

More than likely, you’re going to hang at least one thing on at least one wall in your home. If it has some weight, you want to make sure it’s not going to tear through the wall. This requires finding the stud behind the wall so you can screw or nail into it.  With an electronic stud finder, you simply drag the device over a wall and it “senses” where the stud is located.

7. Wrench

When you have bolts, nuts, or other objects that need tightening or loosening, you need a wrench. We recommend an adjustable wrench so it’s more versatile. Also, the other forms that come in handy include pipe, Allen, and socket wrenches.

8. Pliers

Pliers are useful for gripping, cutting, removing screws, and straightening and bending objects. There are several different kinds out there, and it’s easy to find a set that gives you a good variety. This may include slip-joint, tongue-and-groove, and needle-nose pliers.

9. Utility Knife

If you need to cut something with precision, a utility knife is your best friend. And, it’s almost guaranteed your relationship will last through the years since the blades are retractable and replaceable.

10. Power Drill

You don’t need a fancy, high-powered power drill for it to become a vital tool in your collection. Obviously, it’s perfect for drilling holes in a jiff, but that’s not its only talents. Depending on the drill bit used and the speed, it’s also useful as a screwdriver, buffer, and sander.

11. Circular Saw

At some point, you might take on a task that requires lumber cuts. A circular saw works great in this situation. Plus, there are multiple blades for use with a variety of materials including metal, masonry, and plastic. A 15-amp circular saw is standard.

12. Crowbar

A crowbar is a must-have tool for home renovation projects. It’s good for demolition work such as pulling nails, removing wood and molding, and pulling up flooring and tile.

13. Ladder

Unless you insist on climbing up walls (not recommended) or you’re a giant, you know what this is for.

14. Cleaning Tools

Okay, so cleaning supplies may not be what you think about when you hear “household tools”; however, they shouldn’t be discounted. Home projects can result in a mess. For the safety of you and others, you should clean your job site as best as possible. In addition to your trusty household cleaner, there are specific supplies you should also have on hand:

  • Hand vacuum for picking up dust and any small items left on the ground
  • Damp microfiber cloth for properly trapping household dust on counters and appliances, etc.
  • Dusting kit with extension to reach high areas such as ceilings, light fixtures, and tops of cabinets
  • Scrub brush for dealing with stains and other heavy-duty messes

Of course, if for some reason the job results in a hazardous situation, it’s probably best to call in professionals, which we’ll discuss next.

15. A Helping Hand

It happens to the best of us so don’t feel bad if you get more than you bargain for with a DIY project. Sometimes, mistakes are made, and the result is damage.

As an example, you might cause a water or sewage leak, or you might deeply stain carpets and furniture. Or, in a more serious predicament, you might stumble upon mold growth as you’re working on something. In cases like these, you should consider contacting a cleanup and restoration specialist with a diverse set of capabilities.

Not to toot our own horn, but SERVPRO of North Irving is one such specialist. As we mentioned, we provide restoration and cleaning services in Dallas. This goes beyond dealing with storm, water, and fire damage. We’re a full-service company with a wide range of skills:

Top 5 Reasons You Should Hire A Professional Upholstery Cleaner

6/11/2019 (Permalink)

Do you have kids? How about pets? Maybe you just have dirty friends. In any situation, there may come a time when you need to clean up your carpets and upholstery.

You may first ask yourself if you should go the DIY route and rent one of those machines at the local grocery store. But, how can you be sure that you’re using the right cleaners and equipment for your precious belongings?

If you’re new to cleaning upholstery or have expensive furniture you cannot afford to replace, a professional team should take care of the job. The benefit of experts is in their knowledge and state-of-the-art equipment. (Plus the clean, allergen-free upholstery that you get to enjoy afterwards.)

If you want to increase the life of your furniture, improve the quality of the air in your home, and remove damaging dust, allergens, and bacteria, hiring a restoration specialist is your best option. What’s more, it’s totally affordable!

Let’s discuss the five major reasons why you should hire an upholstery cleaning service.

1. Professionals Are Trained For The Job

Cleaning upholstery well is not something anyone can do. The right approach to the task demands practice and knowledge. This includes deciphering pressure levels as well as the perfect mix of water and cleaning products. Professional carpet and upholstery cleaning is more complicated than using a vacuum, and our team members are trained to know exactly how to handle every job.

The work from a well-trained cleaner will be different from that of someone working on a big, clunky machine for the first time (no offense — it’s not your fault they’ve been renting the same machines for 100 years). Many homeowners end up having to hire a cleaner after trying a rented machine because the results were not what they had hoped for. Save some money and time and opt for a service from the get-go!

2. Professionals Know How To Handle All Materials

Not every upholstery fabric is created equal. Without a good knowledge of fabrics and their characteristics, you risk damaging your furniture. A cleanup and restoration team, on the other hand, can handle different types of fabrics, and they have specialized products and equipment for even the trickiest jobs.

Knowledge and precision are especially important if you own antique or heirloom furniture, or luxury rugs and carpets. Making a simple cleaning mistake such as using too much water or the wrong cleaning product can damage the fibers, leading to a loss of value or making the furniture completely unusable.

3. A Professional Cleaning Improves Air Quality

The main reason for cleaning your upholstery and carpets is aesthetic. Many of us like to “keep up with the Joneses” — we want our homes looking good and our furniture looking new. But, hiring cleaners also has health benefits: doing so improves air quality.

Over time, allergens, dust, and bacteria accumulate inside the cushions of your soft furniture. Vacuuming may take care of surface material like pet hair and dander and other dirt, but it doesn't clean deep enough to remove all the things that make their way inside. A cleaner's equipment is meant to remove all the allergens that accumulate inside your furniture and reduce the air quality of your home.

Also, pet odor removal is a great service offered by restoration and cleanup firms. This is something that you may find difficult to achieve on your own. Odors tend to set deeply into fabrics and cushions. You may take care of the visible stain, but some of the smell makes its way inside and requires a deep cleaning to remove.

After an upholstery cleaning, your home will be healthier thanks to the removal of allergens and bacteria.

4. Professional Cleaning Extends The Life Of Your Furniture

Did you know that dust plays a part in the thinning of fabric on upholstered furniture? Microscopic sharp corners from dust and dirt weaken the fibers of your fabric, leaving it looking somewhat pale and tattered. With residential and commercial restoration services, that damaging dust is removed and upholstery is kept looking new for longer.

What does this mean for you? Well, more years of comfortably enjoying your favorite movies on the couch, or elegantly hosting dinner parties with beautifully upholstered dining chairs. The Joneses will be so jealous.

In the long run, this will save you money, since you do not need to replace your furniture as often. For best results, we recommend cleaning your furniture every one to two years, depending on use, presence of pets, or other causes of damage and smells like smoking.

5. Professional Cleaners Use The Best Equipment

What you’ve probably gathered by now is upholstery cleaning machine rentals do not always give you access to the best and latest cleaning technology. These machines can be old, misused, or broken, and you won’t know until you’re about to start your project. Reputable cleaning and aftermath cleanup companies use the best equipment available to ensure faster work and exceptional results. As an example, SERVPRO of North Irving provides upholstery cleaning in Dallas and uses only the most advanced materials and methods.

The right tools make for the right results. Specialists maintain their equipment in tiptop shape which ensures the cleaning services are consistent.

How To Make The Best Of Your Professional Cleaning

So, you’ve decided to invest in a cleaning and restoration service for your upholstery and carpets. Good choice! Now here's how to make the best out of the service:

Vacuum everything first. Just before the cleaners come, vacuum the areas and the furniture that will be cleaned. This will remove most of the pet hair, dirt, and dust on the surface. Because these particles are difficult to remove once wet, it's better to take them off before the deep cleaning begins.

  • Point out stains and other concerns. If you have specific concerns with stains or bad smells, make sure to point them out to the team who comes to your home. They will know what to look for and make sure they have everything they need to take care of the problem.
  • Enjoy this free time. The time cleaners spend cleaning your upholstery is the time you have to do something for yourself. Brew your favorite tea and read a book. Head outside and play with your kids. Enjoy these few hours that you will NOT be spending on house chores.

SERVPRO of North Irving is a full-service cleaning and restoration company offering not only upholstery and carpet cleaning services, but also disaster remediation, commercial restoration services, mold removal, and water and fire damage cleaning.

If you want more information about our upholstery cleaning in Dallas or would like to receive a quote for our services, do not hesitate to contact us by phone at 972-986-7677. Our friendly staff will answer all your questions and make an appointment if needed.

Choosing the Ideal Crime Scene Cleanup Company

5/17/2019 (Permalink)

A crime or death scene can be a sensitive situation for more reasons than one. In addition to the struggle a victim or loved one might feel in the aftermath, there are many other factors they deal with such as media exposure and messy, hazardous materials. When someone is in a position like this, a restoration professional should perform trauma and crime scene cleanup.

But, what’s important to remember is that not all cleanup firms are created equal. The ideal business is going to have extensive knowledge of the proper protocols as well as the etiquette in dealing with hard circumstances. If you find your home or business is affected by a crime or death, and you’re in need of an experienced cleanup company, here’s what to expect. (Don’t settle for less).

When The Police and Coroners Leave

In many cases, the assistance of a cleanup business is required as soon as the police or coroners are finished with the scene. For example, there are several instances in which SERVPRO of North Irving is called in to provide assistance:

  • Homicide
  • Suicide
  • Accidental death
  • Accidents with traumatic injuries
  • Unattended death
  • Damage caused by graffiti and vandalism

We’ve performed crime scene cleanup in all types of environments including homes, vehicles, commercial buildings, police stations, jails, gyms, hotels, medical offices, and many more. Besides the damage left by the crime itself, materials may be left behind by police and other investigators. In addition to cleaning up bodily fluids and tissue, we deal with residue from fire extinguishers, pepper spray, tear gas, and fingerprint powder.

It’s crucial to have a company that is well trained in a variety of conditions. Additionally, technicians need to have keen attention to detail. If one bit of material is missed, it can potentially result in unhealthy and unsafe conditions.

Biohazard Cleanup and Restoration

Speaking of unsafe conditions, it’s essential to hire specialists with expertise in dealing with biohazards. The EPA and OSHA have specific guidelines for cleaning and disposal that must be followed. A top-notch operation should be able to handle an array of crime scene cleanup and restoration services.

Infectious Substances

When a crime involves injury or death, there may be a decent amount of nasty stuff present on surfaces including waste, infectious disease, and bloodborne pathogens. It’s not enough to remove this material like you would in a normal cleaning situation. These substances must be specially cleaned, disinfected, and deodorized according to the strict regulations.

Meth Lab Residue

Methamphetamines are produced with harmful chemicals. Unfortunately, the drug doesn’t have to be present in order for dangerous chemicals to cause trouble. Residue from the meth-making process can stick to walls and other spaces. Such residue is not only flammable, but also detrimental to your health.

It’s worth noting that meth is not the only illegal substance that can cause problems. Other drugs can produce chemical dangers as well and should also be professionally cleaned.

Animal Biohazards

That’s right — trauma and crime scene cleanup isn’t restricted to matter left behind by humans. Animal carcasses and waste can also be harmful and need to be cleaned with care.

Damage Mitigation

There are instances when the damage caused by a crime or trauma can result in further damage if not properly addressed. These types of issues should also be a focus. After all, when a tragedy occurs, the last thing a victim wants to deal with is restoring a property.

A cleanup specialist should assist and may offer services such as boarding up sections of a structure, tarping a roof, removing and replacing floors and subflooring, and reconstruction (if damage is significant enough where portions of a building need to be rebuilt).

Availability, Compassion, and Professionalism

Crime and death can happen anywhere and at any time. When the authorities have finished their investigative processes and the scene becomes ready for the cleaning and removal of contaminated items, a specialist needs to respond immediately. An ideal company should be available for emergency crime scene cleanup 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.

Also, it’s not enough to be trained in the physical process of crime and death scene cleanup. A technician must also understand how to appropriately communicate with victims in a compassionate manner. Often times, loved ones and victims are emotionally overwhelmed by the terrible situation and need empathy.

To give another example, at SERVPRO in North Irving, technicians are taught how to navigate a delicate circumstance like a death scene. In some cases, there may be a concern about media attention. We work to be quick and discreet in order to preserve a victim’s privacy. This means we’ll work on a project late at night, throughout the night, and on the weekends.

Plus, our additional services set us apart from other companies that offer crime scene cleanup services:

  • If requested, arriving on the property in an unmarked vehicle
  • Arranging for the technician to gain access when loved ones are not present (i.e. a key via lockbox)Assessing other areas of the property
  • Organizing, packing, and documenting items and moving them to a storage facility
  • Delivering stored items to another location
  • If loved ones decide to sell an affected property, removing all possessions from the home and storing them in our cleaning facility
  • Throwing away unwanted items
  • If requested, cleaning the HVAC system and air ducts

In case you’re wondering why we can speak to this subject, SERVPRO of North Irving is an affordable, full-service business that has been serving the Dallas area for over three decades. With us, you don’t need to worry about hiring one firm for cleanup and another for reconstruction. We can do it all.

On top of crime and death scene cleanup, we specialize in mold remediation, and water and fire damage restoration. Our technicians are certified and work with state-of-the-art techniques and equipment. We’re available day or night, every day of the year. So, if you should find yourself in need of a company to provide crime scene cleanup or other restoration services, call us at (972) 986-7677 or contact us online.

Top 5 Reasons You Should Clean Your Air Ducts

5/17/2019 (Permalink)

We’re all big fans of oxygen, right? Well, it turns out your home is a big fan of it as well.

You can look at your HVAC and air ducts as a circulatory system. It keeps homes and buildings “alive” by pumping air into and from every room. As it is with humans, when airflow is restricted, complications start to arise. This is why cleaning your air ducts is an important service to consider.

We understand you might be wondering if you need to get your air ducts and HVAC cleaned. Not all homes are the same, not everyone lives the same, and there are various factors that may affect air quality. Since we’re considered one of the top air duct cleaners in Dallas (nothing wrong with a little confidence every now and then), we understand the problems that a dirty duct system can cause.

Generally speaking, cleaning should happen every three to five years. However, if any of the following applies to you, consider cleaning your air ducts more frequently:

  • You or someone you live with suffers from allergies
  • You or someone you live with has respiratory issues
  • You have one pet or more
  • You have a smoker living in the house
  • You live in an older home

This isn’t to say these are the only reasons to consider cleaning your HVAC. That would make this a short article, and we know you’d feel cheated. There are several major benefits in hiring a professional to inspect and clean your HVAC system. Of course, we’ll expand upon this now.

1. A Healtheir Living Environment

As you might recall, we mentioned people with respiratory and allergy problems. These folks tend to be more sensitive to particles and dust in a home. But, unclean air can affect a person with no breathing problems as well. (Our air duct cleaners in Dallas see it all the time because of the infamous Texas dust.)

Here’s the deal — there may be more in the dust and dirt than meets the eye. Depending on who or what occupies your home, there could be pet dander, skin cells, pollen, bacteria, and other gross particles. As Discover Magazine revealed, a house with six rooms can collect 40 pounds of dust a year! Additionally, the EPA terrified us all with the fact that indoor air is 20 percent more polluted than outdoor air.

Luckily, the right cleanup and restoration firm will service your HVAC, air ducts, and replace your filters. This will reduce or remove dirt, dust, pollen, pet dander, and contaminants.

2. Protection Against Contamination

As if skin cells and bacteria weren’t enough, there are other issues that require a more serious approach to HVAC and air duct cleaning. It is possible for your system to harbor some nasty stuff that’s potentially detrimental to your health.

Mold can not only make its way into portions of your HVAC system, but it can also end up in the insulation of your ducts (if insulation exists). This fungus may or may not visible. If you think mold might be present somewhere, a professional should be called in to inspect.

Rodents and Insects

Sorry if that made your skin crawl, but it’s true. Rodents and insects can move through your house leaving droppings and other potentially disease-causing matter behind. This can end up in your air!

3. Save Money

Having a little extra spending money isn’t such a bad thing, right? Cleaning and maintaining your HVAC unit can increase energy efficiency and decrease utility bills.

If dust and dirt buildup is reducing the airflow in the HVAC and ducts, it causes the whole system to work harder. This may involve longer running times, which can shorten the life of your system.

Plus, if components of your HVAC unit are clogged, you might get less heat in the winter and a lack of cooling in the summer. Again, this can result in longer running times.

Obviously, the more a unit runs, the more money you’re paying. And, we don’t need to talk about the cost of replacing an entire HVAC system.

4. An Overall Cleaner Home

Your HVAC system circulates air through the home which means if it’s picking up dust and contaminants, it’s moving that stuff from room to room. This means your furniture and personal belongings are being showered by particles.

Also, if there is a buildup of mold, bacteria, and other unpleasant organisms, you could end up with an odor in your home. We’re fairly certain that the majority of folks do not like living in a stinky house. The removal of this matter can eliminate the bad smell.

5. You’re Unsure Of Your Home’s History

It probably goes without saying that if you’re in a brand-new home, you most likely don’t have to be too concerned about your ducts yet. But, as we all know, not everyone buys new.

When you purchase a home from someone else, the HVAC unit might be on the older side. There could be years of wear and tear that you’re unaware of. Moreover, you can’t be certain about the cleaning history of the ducts and HVAC.

It’s also worth mentioning that if you perform any renovation or remodeling, this can increase dust, dirt, and allergens in the home and HVAC unit.

Tips on How to Keep Your Carpet Clean If You Have Pets

3/20/2019 (Permalink)

Pets are adorable, but let’s face it, a lot can happen to your carpet over a short period of time if you have a pet or two.

Perhaps you have a playful puppy or kitten that hasn’t quite figured out that your carpet is not the same thing as your lawn. Or, if you are lucky enough to have a pet that knows the difference between carpet and grass, you’re likely still dealing with shedding, dander, and the all-too-common mud tracks coming in from outside.

Long story short, if you have pets, your carpet probably doesn’t smell (or look) as good as it did when it was originally installed. Of course, pet ownership is worth the work that goes into it, but you’ll need to take a few extra steps to keep your house clean for you and any guests you have over.

Sure, it can be a lot of work - but don’t sweat it - it’s manageable, especially with the help of an experienced professional! Read on to learn how to keep your carpet clean despite your pets being, well… pets.

How to Keep Your Carpet Clean if You Have Pets

1. Go Hard on the Stains

Have a puppy with a long tail? Spillage accidents are bound to happen whenever you have a new pet running around. Of course, it’s cute when your puppy is happy, but when that turns into their happy, wagging tail spilling your coffee off the coffee table, it’s just a little less cute.

First things first, catch these accidents as soon as possible to prevent the spots from taking hold on your carpet (especially if you have light-colored carpet).

When solids (such as food) fall on the floor, use a dustpan to remove what you can, then cover the stain with paper towels. Once the area is dry, clean it with warm water to prevent discoloration.

Expert Carpet Cleaning Tip: If the spill happens at night or when you are away at work, use a combination of vinegar and cold water once you spot the spill to remove the odor. Follow this up by scrubbing the area with a good carpet cleaner.

2. Vacuum Clean Your Carpet Twice Per Week

Vacuuming is your best line of defense when trying to remove pet hair from your carpet - both visible and hidden in the fibers.

Even if your pets don’t shed fur, they may still be shedding dander (the allergy-causing particles in their coats), and, if you live in a typical household, dust and food particles are thriving in your carpet fibers and creating odors that are… less than desirable - to say the very least.

The next time you are vacuuming, move your furniture towards the edges of the room so that you can get to the whole length of the carpet (depends on the layout of your room).

In addition, pet hair can travel underneath the furniture, especially if you have a nearby air vent or fan, allowing odor-creating particles to hide long enough to put off an unpleasant odor.

Pro Tip #1: For the best results, use duct tape before vacuuming to pick large chunks of hair. If you don’t have a roll handy, there’s always a DIY solution! Try wetting your kitchen rubber gloves and running your hands quickly through the carpet to pick up the pet hair.

Pro Tip #2: One other thing to keep in mind is that pets drool all over their toys, so clean those toys relatively often so smelly saliva residue doesn’t have a fighting chance at ruining your movie night.

3. Place a Rug or a Towel at Each Entrance

If you walk your pets often, you’ve probably realized that most of the dirt on your carpet comes from outside. Don’t worry - there’s a quick fix for this problem!

Place a towel or a small rug at each outside entrance to your home/apartment, or living space. When you get back from your walk, wipe the pet’s paws before setting them free to roam inside.

Some pets might resist the new routine at first, but after a few weeks, they’ll have it down (and so will you)!

4. Clean Pet Urine off Your Carpet

No matter how well trained your pets are, they are bound to urinate on the carpet from time to time. To clean it up, start by laying a small towel over the patch.

How Do I Clean Pet Urine Off Of My Carpet?

As the urine absorbs into the towel, mix some warm water with your dishwashing liquid and pour it on the stain and rinse the stain with a clean towel and warm water. Finally, lay some paper towels on the stain to absorb moisture and rid your carpet of any odor. Voila!

Tip: For vomit stains, pour some club soda on the spot and let it sit for 30 seconds. Next, soak up the stain with a dry cloth. Repeat this until nothing is being transferred to the cloth.

5. Keep Your Pets Well Groomed

Have you ever sat down on your carpet, taken a sniff and thought, “this smells like a dirty dog”?

If you have, it’s probably an indicator that you need to groom your pets more often. Bathing your pets regularly will definitely help to keep the rugs odor free.

Also, trim their nails (but be careful not to trim too much). Long pet nails can damage carpet fibers and spread them all over the place.  Keep up the grooming and brush your pets regularly (outside) and your carpet will look and smell great for much longer!

6. Get Professional Carpet Cleaning Help

By now you have probably noticed that pets and carpets are not exactly a match made in heaven, and sometimes things may get out of control.

For example, if you have sick pets in the house, they may puke or relieve themselves on the carpet. In some of these incidences, the odor may be too much for you to eliminate on your own, which is where a professional pet odor removal company comes in.

Pet odor removal companies have the necessary products and experience to handle stubborn odors and stains. Before freaking out and deciding to replace your dirty carpet, give a professional pet odor removal company a call and let them work their magic.

From the moment you adopt a pet, you have your work cut out for you. Feeding and bathing them is part of it, but so is keeping your living space clean with them around. While the tips above will come in handy, do not hesitate to call a professional carpet cleaning company for more advice on how to keep your carpet clean.

Crime Scene Cleanup in Dallas

2/7/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of North Irving is available 24 hours a day for crime scene cleanup, including biohazard situations. We've serviced DFW for over 30 years.

Biohazard Cleanup in the Scene of a Crime

There are a number of potential causes that necessitate biohazard cleanups, and sometimes these are the direct result of a crime committed in a residential or commercial property. These crimes can include homicide, breaking and entering, theft, and potentially any crime that occurred on your property. A lot of the information regarding the cleanup of crime scenes that include biological fluids can be read about in more detail in our article "Bio-hazard Cleanup." There are a few key differences and different circumstances that warrant its own topic.

Crime Scene Boards Ups

The first key difference is that crime scene cleanup is not limited to biological cleanups. We are not solely discussing homicides, but rather any crime committed on the property that requires the services of a professional restoration company. An all too common occurrence is breaking and entering. This could leave your home with a broken window or broken lock. After this kind of traumatic experience, it is important for you and your family’s safety that you call SERVPRO of North Irving immediately and begin the board up process.

Board ups include securing wood over a window or door that otherwise are not there or not secure anymore.  Board ups deter any would-be criminal activity and are a temporary solution until insurance adjusters and contractors can assess your home or business and rebuild the door or window permanently.

Expediency is important. A board up is often times the first step in crime scene cleanup. The immediacy by which you call us can prevent further damages or further crimes on your property. You will be hard pressed to find a window installer that can help when you return home in the middle of the night to find your window was collateral damage after a burglary, and many families won’t feel safe without a window after being the victim of a crime.

We’re here to help 24 hours a day.  In the hectic scramble that is the aftermath of a crime, keep in mind what work needs to be done immediately. A board up definitely falls in this category.

Fingerprint Dust Cleaning

Another distinct difference between a biohazard cleanup and a crime scene cleanup can be the involvement of police and forensic investigators. These people work diligently to find the culprit of the crime, and can oftentimes leave behind cleanup work to be performed.

One example would be a black dust-like substance that police use to try and find fingerprints of potential suspects, which is generally called fingerprint powder. They may use this substance on window sills, walls, furniture and other surfaces around your house in an attempt to further their investigation. Cleaning this up, however, is no simple task.

More often than not, the use of regular residential vacuum cleaners will not completely remove this substance.  Rather, the use of an industrial carpet cleaning machine in tandem with a HEPA vacuum will have to be employed to fully extract the powder. Depending on the surface, the extent to which the powder is spread, and other factors, will influence how much and what type of cleaning work will be involved.

A cleaning professional is necessary not just for your biohazard cleanup after a crime but also for the forensic cleanup. The fingerprint powders are some of the most commonly used examples, but police departments and forensic teams are constantly developing new ways to approach a crime scene, and with that comes new cleaning and restoration needs once the dust settles.

Similar to the board up process, once you know the police are finished with their investigation, call us as soon as possible as the cleaning of fingerprint dust and other investigative residue is more successful and far easier the sooner we are able to tackle it.

Call SERVPRO of North Irving for 24 Hour Crime Scene Cleaning

A common theme amongst these crime scene tips is to give us a call as soon as you are aware of the crime and restoration service you are in need of.

However, during crime scene cleaning, we have to wait for investigations to be thoroughly completed, and for police to clear the scene for cleaning. This applies less to board ups, but more towards crime scenes that involve biological fluids or forensic residue needing to be remediated. Similar to waiting for the Fire Department clearance during fire jobs, we cannot impede upon the Police Departments work at the scene of the crime and therefore must wait for their clearance in order to perform whatever cleaning and restoration services are necessary.

Our team at SERVPRO of North Irving have over 30 years of experience remediating biohazard cleanups, and oftentimes these are the result of crimes. We have cleaned up after, and assisted, many Police Departments in the Dallas area and Ellis County after a slew of different crimes, and we are always ready to help you.

Our crews are available dispatch for 24-hour emergencies every day of the year.  We can be reached 24/7 at (972) 986-7677.  Call us any time!

Winter Weather Pet Safety Tips

Winter Weather Pet Safety Tips

At SERVPRO of North Irving, we are all pet lovers.  We even have an office pet -- an African Grey named Gracie.

Whether it's our own pets or those of our customers, we’re always looking out for our furry (or feathered) friends and making sure their environments are safe and clean.

This is why protecting pets during winter is an important topic for us.

Winter Weather? Bring your Pet Indoors

If the temperature outside is uncomfortable for you, it’s also uncomfortable for a dog or cat.

Indoor Pet Care

  • Keep your pet in a safe environment away from poisons or other items they might be tempted to chew when they’re not being supervised (e.g. exposed electrical cords or your favorite loafers).  Pet gates are great -- if your pet can’t jump over them or just push them out of the way!
  • Keep your pet in a kennel when you’re away from home.
  • Have an extra supply of cleaning supplies should an accident happen.  If the accident is too much for you to clean up or becomes a mess on your carpet, just give us a call.  We’ll take care of it.

Pet Exercise

  • Make time each day to take pets out for a walk.  This is a great time to release some energy.
  • Dry your pet’s paws and in between their toes with a towel after a walk.  The cold and any chemicals used to melt ice or snow can be irritable to their skin and poisonous if they lick it off.
  • Short haired pets may need to wear a sweater outdoors.

Pet Food

  • Place your pet’s water and food in a plastic bowl.  Their tongues may stick to a metal container.
  • If your pet can safely spend a lot of time outdoors, they also may need to consume more food since their body will need more energy to stay warm.
  • Outdoor shelters should be big enough to allow movement but small enough to contain body heat.  They should also be a few inches off the ground and the door covered with a heavy plastic to prevent precipitation from getting inside.

Carpet Cleaning Dallas

With so much time being spent indoors, more dust and dander will accumulate in your carpets than usual.  We recommend vacuuming at least twice a week to keep your carpet clean and prevent it from getting damaged.

For deep carpet cleaning services, give us a call.  We can wet wash your carpet and spray down a sanitizer and deodorizer to leave it smelling the way you like it.  We recommend at least one deep carpet cleaning per year.

Our carpet cleaning bids are free and cover all possible spot cleaning.  We will not give you a low bid for your carpet cleaning only to surprise you with upcharges.  We’re happy to schedule a carpet cleaning any time.

Upholstery Cleaning Services

If your pets have been taking a nap on the family couch, it may be time to get it cleaned.  We can either come to your home and clean your upholstery on the spot or we can take it back to our cleaning facility.

If your pet’s bed needs a wash but is too big for your home washer, or if you just want them professionally cleaned, we can also provide you with this service!

Our Esporta Wash System is a specialized wet wash that handles large pet beds and cleans them to food grade clean.  Our cleaning system is something commercial laundromats and dry cleaners cannot replicate. The Esporta uses hydraulic pressure to push detergent laden water through each layer of fabric in the pet’s bed.  It literally pushes all contaminants out of the fabric! This leaves your pet bed fresh and as clean as the day you bought it.

Our technicians will pick up all the pet beds you’d like cleaned and deliver them as soon as they’re done.

Air Duct Cleaning

With your pets spending more time indoors, you’ll want to make sure you change your HVAC filters more frequently.  At the most, change your filters every 3 months. They’ll need it!

If your family is sensitive to dust, odors, and other contaminants, consider an air duct cleaning.  This service will remove the dust in your air ducts and will help push only clean, filtered air through your system.  It takes only a few hours and the resulting improvement in air quality is worth it.

Give us a call.  We can inspect your home’s ducts and make a recommendation to keep your home’s air quality safe during the winter.

What Are Textiles and How to Clean Them

12/14/2017 (Permalink)

An ATP Meter measures the Relative Light Units given off by microbes and helps us determine the contamination level of textiles.

What Are Textiles and How to Clean Them

Contaminated textiles happen at almost all water damages and fires damages.  Our team at SERVPRO of North Irving routinely packs up contaminated items and takes them to our in house cleaning facility for sanitation.

What Are Textiles?

Picture your home being flipped upside down.  Everything that is not attached to the house itself will fall down.  Those items that fall are called contents.  Now imagine going through all those fallen items and sorting them by what broke versus what did not break.  The items that did not break are most likely textiles.

Textiles include items like:

  • Sheets
  • Blankets
  • Shoes
  • Clothing
  • Stuffed animals
  • Toys
  • Sports equipment, including helmets
  • Hats

We take all of these kinds of items from your property and get them ready for a specialized sanitation wash in a machine called the Esporta.  We are one of the few Esporta certified businesses in North Texas, and our technicians have successfully cleaned over 100,000 items that otherwise would have been thrown away.  Our success rate is over 85% -- among the highest in the textile restoration industry!

Testing Cleanliness in Textiles with ATP Testing

One of the first actions our textile team does is test the items for their contamination levels.

To test cleanliness, we use ATP testing -- adenosine triphosphate.  ATP is found in all living cells. The higher the ATP number something has, the more contaminated it is.

ATP Testing Process

We take an ATP sample of your textiles before and after they are washed.   We test before they are washed to prove that your textile is actually contaminated enough to warrant professional cleaning.  If it isn’t, there’s no reason to pay us to wash it.

We also test after the item is washed to prove our team has successfully decontaminated your item.  This is how we make sure your clothes are safe and healthy to wear again.

Taking an ATP sample is simple.

First, we use an ATP Sampling Swab and swab the surface area of the affected textile.  The swab is coated with a detergent that lifts ATP from the textile.

Then, we moisten the swab with a bioluminescent reagent, which will make the ATP create light.  The amount of light that is created is directly correlated to the amount of ATP on the textile.

Finally, we insert the wet swab into an ATP meter, which measures the light.  The result we receive is in Relative Light Units (RLU). Using this data, our technicians know the level of contamination.

A “pass” score on the ATP meter puts the item at a food grade safe level, meaning it is clean and safe to handle or wear again.  If an item receives a fail score, it will be washed again.

How Esporta Works

The Esporta Wash System process is simple.  Our machine uses a combination of up to six environmentally friendly detergents according to the type of contamination the clothing contains.

Textiles are placed inside the machine in separate compartments.  Inside, they spin in detergent-laden water while staying in place.  Since the items don’t move inside the machine, the textiles are cleaned by hydraulic pressure instead of agitation.  This makes the Esporta system gentle on all fabrics, even as contaminants are literally pushed out of the fabric by the detergent water.

The end result is textiles that are near neutral pH and food grade clean.

We have successfully sanitized items with the following contaminants:

Most textile cleaning projects are packed out, cleaned, and delivered back to the homeowner within two weeks.

If emergency items are needed, we ask the homeowner what items they need and make sure to wash those on an emergency basis, which cuts down the time of delivery to less than 72 hours.

We offer emergency items because we understand that everyone needs clothing to continue their day to day living, even in the middle of a disaster.

At SERVPRO of North Irving, we have invested in the most advanced wash system -- the Esporta Wash System.  With Esporta and the ATP sampling system, we can always prove our results.

An independent study by Wonder Makers Environmental took sewage contaminated textiles.  The study concluded that the Esporta Wash System is effective at removing bacterial contamination and that the ATP sampling system is an effective means of field verification.

Since textiles are what we wear, what we sleep on, and what our children play with, cleaning and making them safe to handle again is our top priority.

We can prove it.

How to Wash A Comforter

4/26/2017 (Permalink)

An internal shot of the Esporta washing machine. This shows how our machine's compartments lock items in place to ensure a gentle and efficient wash.

Why Wash a Comforter, Linens, and Bed Sheets?

We’re talking about everything on top of your mattress -- sheets, blankets, and comforters.  All of these items are meant to keep your mattress clean and to keep you comfortable and warm while you sleep.

But if you don’t clean them often enough, they eventually become a bacterial mess.

What’s on Bedding?

What is on your skin rubs off onto your linens.  That includes any ointments, unwashed makeup, and whatever else you’ve carried on your skin and hair and haven’t washed off before bed.

Over the course of just a few days, this mixture will accumulate on your linens and rub against you as you sleep, possibly causing your skin some problems like irritation or acne.

How to Clean Sheets

Sheets are easy to clean.  Throw them into your washer once a week using the warm/hot water setting.  Don’t overcrowd the machine.

After their wash, throw them in the dryer with a rubber dryer ball to make sure they dry evenly.

Then, store them in a cool, dry place where dust won’t find them.  This is how they’ll stay fresh and clean for their next use.

How to Clean Comforters and Blankets

Blankets and comforters are usually protected by your top sheet, but eventually, they need some love, too.  These can be washed at home, however, large ones with heavy fibers can be a challenge to wash properly.

For these pieces to be cleaned thoroughly, water should penetrate the fibers to force the contaminants off.

We’ve heard about some trouble people have had at home, and we’ve had this trouble ourselves.

  • The washing machine can’t properly soak the comforter all the way through
  • The washing machine leaves soap behind

In these cases, you need a bigger and more powerful machine.  Some people find a commercial laundromat that can fit their sized comforters, and others take them to their local dry cleaner.

Commercial Laundromats and Dry Cleaners

We don’t prefer either of these methods for a few reasons:

  • A traditional machine, even a commercial sized one, will wash your comforter using agitation.  Imagine it in the machine getting tossed and turned. That agitation will eventually damage the fabrics and cause them to fray.  If you are trying to clean a family heirloom blanket, this is a problem.
  • Dry cleaners use harsh chemicals to wash clothing.  This isn’t something many people prefer to have to touch their skin at night.

If you’re having trouble washing your heavy comforter or blanket, we can help.

Our Esporta Washing System will not just wash your comforter, but it will disinfect your comforters and blankets.

Our machine looks like a huge laundry machine, but it has different compartments inside.  We will place your comforter into one of these compartments and tell the machine what kind of cycle to run.

After we shut the door, the bottom half of the machine fills up with water that gets mixed with up to six different detergents.  Then, the machine’s compartments start to spin rapidly.

While your comforter is locked into place and doesn’t move at all, the hydraulic pressure created by the spinning literally pushes the detergent-laden water through every single layer of fabric in your comforter.  This movement causes over 99% of contaminants to be pushed out.

The lack of agitation inside the machine means your comforter stays in its position and is not rubbed or twisted.  This process makes it a lot more gentle on its fabrics.

One of the best aspects of the machine is that the clothing that comes out of the wash are food grade clean and near pH neutral.  Our detergents are environmentally friendly and safe for your skin.

After its wash, each comforter is dried either in a gentle dryer cycle or air dried in a specialized chamber.  After it’s dry, we test your comforter to ensure it meets our disinfection standards, and you are always provided with a copy of those results.

We’ve successfully sanitized thousands of pieces of clothing and textiles, including those that have been in sewage contaminated water, covered in fire smoke, and even mold infested.  We have one of the highest rates of restoration success in the industry with over 85% of textiles sanitized and completely restored to satisfaction.

We pick up and drop off your textiles anywhere in Dallas, Fort Worth Metroplex.  Call or email us today if you have questions or you’d like a free quote.

We’re ready to help!

Soft Contents Restoration

Soft contents restoration is a specialized service within the restoration industry.  Since we clean clothing and other textiles that have been affected by mold, soot, and contaminated water, our specialists put on personal protective equipment while they proceed with the Esporta cleaning process.  We have been successful in cleaning the following:

  • Mold affected clothing and shoes.  We have cleaned all types of mold.
  • Smoke, soot affected clothing.  After a water damage, one of the first things we take out of a home is the clothing and textiles to avoid the soot from permanently staining the clothing.
  • Sports equipment, including sports with padded equipment like football and hockey.
  • Water damaged clothing from contaminated waters like category 2 water and category 3 water (gray and black water).

Water Damage Restoration Texas

There are many water damage restoration companies in Texas, but only a few offer in house Esporta services.  Choose a business that can take care of your clothing themselves instead of a company that will take your clothes and give them to another business (and possibly charge you more) to take care of this specialty item.

The Esporta is special because it can clean items that have been in contaminated water.  You may have heard of gray or black water. This is what those terms mean.

IICRC Water Classification

  • Category 1 Water (Clean)

(Clean): The water is clean and sanitary.  It does not pose a substantial risk. Category 1 water may turn into a Category 2 or 3 water damage if it's not cleaned soon, typically within 3 days.  If your clothing has been touched by clean water, there’s no problem.  A regular washing machine can take care of this for you.

  • Category 2 Water (Gray)

(Gray): This water carries waste products and is not clean, but it also does not contain human waste.  You may choose to put these clothes in your home washer if you use chemicals that can safely kill the contaminants on your clothes, but this still doesn’t ensure that all contaminants will be flushed out of the clothing’s fabrics.

  • Category 3 Water (Black)

(Black): This water poses a significant health risk.  External flooding and sewage backups are both Category 3 and contain gross contamination and present a danger of spreading bacteria and disease.  Do not attempt to put clothing this dirty in your home laundry.

Fire Damage Restoration Dallas

Many customers ask if how to get fire smoke out of clothes.  Smoke particles are tricky to get out of clothing. Home laundry machines do not have enough power to get the particles completely out, and dry cleaners may permanently leave the particles in.  The most successful rate of restoration for clothing with smoke odor is the Esporta.

Our machine uses hydraulic pressure to literally push the smoke particles out of the clothing.  In many cases, the soot that has settled onto the fabric can also be completely removed. Unfortunately, the soot sometimes leaves a permanent yellow stain if it has stayed on the fabric for multiple days.  If a stain is left, we do not consider the item recovered and we report this to your insurance company.

Time matters when restoring soot stained clothing!  This is why our technicians always gather your clothing and textiles and rush them to our cleaning facility after a water damage.  The faster we can start cleaning them, the higher the chance of everything being recovered.

Mold Remediation Dallas

We’ve successfully remediated thousands of items of clothes with mold spores in them.  When mold is allowed to live on an item long enough, it will eventually eat right through it!  Once that happens, the mold damage is permanent. If we find clothing with mold growth, we’ll immediately get them to our Esporta station for cleaning.

We Offer ATP Testing

We use ATP testing to prove contamination levels.  ATP -- adenosine triphosphate -- is found in all living cells.  Anything alive has ATP. The greater the ATP level, the greater the microbial contamination.

We take an ATP sample of different surfaces before and after they are cleaned, and this is how we prove:

1) if your clothing is dirty enough to warrant professional cleaning, and

2) that our team has successfully sanitized your clothing after cleanup

Our primary purpose in testing for ATP is to prove our results and ensure the safety of our customers.  If any item fails to receive a passing ATP score, the clothing is cleaned again at no added cost to you.  Our process is thorough and gives our customers peace of mind.

We Work With All Insurance Companies

We work with all insurance providers to ask for your textile cleaning to be part of your claim.  Since we do not have access to your insurance policy, we can never say anything definitive until we speak with your adjuster.  In many, clothing mold removal is covered.
