Ceiling Collapses After Water Damage in Dallas

Emergency Water Damage Restoration in Dallas

Emergency water restoration in Dallas was needed after a water heater leak caused water to pool in this home’s attic.  The weight of the water caused the ceiling to collapse, causing water damage in the living room below. The collapsed ceiling affected the flooring, furniture, and some textiles.

When the SERVPRO of North Irving team arrived, the first step was to make sure the water was shut off.  It’s important to always stop the source of water damage. This helps limit the severity of the damage, and it also makes it possible for our team to begin water extraction.

Shutting water off a water heater or water tank is something every homeowner should know how to do.  As soon as you notice a leak from your water, and it’s safe for you to approach your water tank, you can:

  • Turn off the water heater.  If its a gas hook up, twist the valve on your thermostat from on to off.  If it’s an electric water heater, turn it off from your circuit breaker.
  • To turn off the water valve, turn the handle clockwise until it stops.
  • If you cannot do this, consider shutting the water off to your entire home.  You can do this by finding your home’s main water shut off valve and turning it closed.

Be mindful of safety.  If your water heater is in your attic and the water has affected the structural stability of your attic’s beam, call a professional for help.

If you need help shutting off your water, call an emergency plumber.  Find a list of 24-hour plumbers here.

After we ensured the water shut off, we began to extract water from the living room.  Extracting water as fast as possible helps limit secondary damage.  The faster you can remove standing water, the less it can absorb into flooring and cause permanent damage.  Because these homeowners called us quickly, we were able to extract the water and prevent it from soaking into their hardwood.

The next step in a water damage ceiling collapse is to climb into the attic and extract any standing water there as well.  We also remove wet insulation and start to demolition the damaged portions of ceiling. What’s left is a clean environment where we can set dehumidification equipment.

Using commercial dehumidifiers and other drying equipment is necessary to remove excess moisture from the air and help prevent mold.  Any moisture that is not removed has the chance of causing growth. We have to act quickly as mold problems begin in as little as 48 hours.

To protect the family’s electronics, our crews placed protective plastic sheeting around them.  We did this to prevent any airborne dust to enter the device’s crevices and cause damage to their delicate circuitry.  At this time, we also set tarping and tunneling into the attic to help spread warm, dry air into it.

The furniture that was affected by the debris was cleaned on location.  The dust was removed from every surface.

After the home was dried, cleaned of dust and debris, and cleared of mold, our technicians prepared the area for reconstruction.  Reconstruction involves patching the ceiling and repainting it. The water heater was also removed and replaced.
